Below are resources to help you in the career exploration and preparation process.  This partial list will hopefully help you as you develop and achieve your career related goals.Remember to also speak with your Academic Advisor, the Director of International Student Services and members of the Career Services team for assistance related to your career and job search.

  • AIESEC AIESEC also runs an exchange program that enables over 3,500 students and recent graduates the opportunity to live and work in another country.
  • Top Employers for OPT & CPT in the United States
  • H1VisaJobs.com Contains a database of American firms, all over the US, in all disciplines, who have known openings, are willing to, and actually offered H-1B jobs to international professionals.  There is a fee to gain access to the database.
  • InternationalStudent.com The resource section on InternationalStudent.com provides students with access to a number of powerful resources to assist you in your quest to study abroad. The majority of the resources are provided to you free of charge.
  • U.S. Department of Labor’s Certification Data Disclosure – This site will help you find out which companies applied for H-1B visa for one or more employees in the past few years.  This will give you some ideas of employers open to having international employees working for them.  You can search by year, employer or state.

Unfortunately the workplace can be quite a different story in terms of openness and support for LGBTQ employees. You may find yourself with all sorts of career planning challenges that are related to your sexual orientation. The following webpage has been put together by your peers and Career Services as resources to help you as you start to consider the issues faced by LGBTQ people in the workplace. WORKPLACE EMPLOYMENT INFORMATION

  • Sexual Orientation and Career Decision Making – Excellent resource guide from Lawrence University’s Career Services office. The guide provides information on resumes, interviews, employer research, workplace discrimination, and coming out in the workplace.
  • Pride at Work – Mobilizes mutual support between the organized Labor Movement and the LGBT community around organizing for social and economic justice. 
  • Out & Equal – “Out & EqualTM Workplace Advocates” is the pre-eminent national organization devoted to the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community in the workplace. Website includes resources, links and information about their national event.
  • Human Rights Campaign – Information on workplace and corporate policies related to sexual orientation and gender identity. Search the WorkNet Employer Database for information about several hundred organizations’ policies, LGBT employee group contacts, and more. This site pays the most attention to transgender issues in the workplace.

  • ProGayJobs.Com – Site provides job postings from companies that promote diversity and provide safe and open environments for Gay and Lesbian workers.
  • Idealist.org – Thousands of job listings, most in the non-profit sector. This website allows you to search by interest and includes “GLBTQ” as an area of focus.
  • DiversitySearch.comThis site is a diversity career portal for minorities, women and other job seekers and diversity recruiters
  • DiversityWorking.com – We are the career opportunity resource and job search engine for the cultural diversity marketplace. Our employer members use our site to promote, attract and recruit a high performing and in some cases underrepresented employee.

  • Alliance – This student organization works to provide a supportive and accepting environment for students, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity, and to educate and provide resources to the Wartburg community to encourage open discussion about diverse issues pertaining to sexuality.

WORKPLACE EMPLOYMENT INFORMATION

  • Workforce Recruitment Program’s (WRP) – This resource lets you know what federal agencies have current full and part time job openings and internships available for students with disabilities.
  • Entry Point – Identifies and recruits students with apparent and non-apparent disabilities studying in science, engineering, mathematics, computer science, and some fields of business for outstanding internship and co-op opportunities.
  • United States Department of Labor Disability Resources provides resources to help people with disabilities find employment
  • Ability Jobs – Job listings for companies who want to hire individuals with disabilities. Users can also post their resume and setup a job-alert email.
  • DO-IT Guide to Disability Resources on the Internet – DO-IT (Disabilities, Opportunities, Internetworking, and Technology) serves to increase the participation of individuals with disabilities in challenging academic programs and careers. This site is geared toward high school students, however, useful career information for college students can be found.
  • Job Accommodation Network (JAN) – The Job Accommodation Network (JAN) is a free consulting service that provides information about job accommodations, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and the employability of people with disabilities.
  • disABLEDperson.com – Connects job seekers to employers who are proactive about recruiting people with disabilities. Post your resume, read classifieds, visit web sites of employers.
  • FederalJobs.net Disabled Hiring Programs – Currently over 209,284 people with disabilities work for the federal government. This site contains information on hiring options for people with disabilities.
  • ProjectHired.org – Assists individuals with disabilities to gain and sustain employment, in partnership with business and the community.
  • Getting Hired.com the nation’s largest employment and networking portal specifically designed to connect job seekers with disabilities with employers committed to hiring job seekers with disabilities.

As a student with a disability there are important factors for you to consider as you search for internships or employment or apply to graduate school. You may have questions about your rights, disclosure, and which laws might apply to you. Here are some resources to guide your career:
