Professor emeriti Gloria Campbell and Lynn Olson will receive the Wartburg Medal during the college’s commencement ceremony on Sunday, Dec. 15.

The ceremony begins at 10:30 a.m. in Neumann Auditorium and will be livestreamed at wartburgknightvision.com.

The Wartburg Medal recognizes individuals who have provided significant service to the college over a sustained period, and recipients have a personal commitment to the college’s mission, quality and character.

Campbell, who joined the college in 1979, was known as a forward-thinking leader in the Department of Business Administration, Accounting & Economics and across campus. She was an early adopter of teaching technologies and a leader in cultivating alumni engagement. Campbell retired in 2015 and served until 2018 in a part-time role, writing grants and assisting students applying for nationally competitive scholarships.

In the community, Campbell has served on the Waverly Health Center Board of Trustees, the Waverly Utilities Board, the Bremer County Community Foundation Board and the Waverly Public Library Grants Committee. She established the Gloria Campbell Scholarship for students majoring in business administration, accounting or economics.

Olson served Wartburg for 33 years from 1978 to 2011. He was department chair from 1994 to 2009 and was fundamental in forming what is now the Department of Mathematics, Computer Science & Physics. Always mindful of placing the needs of students first, he set the standard for teaching and advising. Olson is credited with creating May Term courses to Germany and the British Isles that focused on math history, experiences that continue to be offered today.

He is an active member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Waverly, previously serving as a member of the Parish Council and as chair of the Parish Life Committee. He is a longtime member of the Rotary Club, served on the Waverly Area United Way Board and volunteered with Meals on Wheels.
