Wartburg’s Riswold publishes fourth book

Wartburg College religion professor Caryn Riswold recently published her fourth book, “ReEngaging ELCA Social Teaching on Abortion,” which calls on readers to reflect on the ELCA’s 1991 social statement on abortion in the 21st century.
Adopted during the 1991 ELCA Churchwide Assembly, the 12-page statement provides guidance for pastoral care and deliberation regarding unintended pregnancies as well as basic themes for reflecting on and discussion of public policy issues. Riswold’s new book looks at the social, political and legal contexts that have changed since the statement was issued.
“Despite those changes, we as Lutherans are still called to compassionate community,” she said. “Knowing this, I want readers to engage in thoughtful conversations that can help us better understand the complex issues surrounding abortion in the United States.”
“ReEngaging ELCA Social Teaching on Abortion” draws on theology, biblical foundations and Lutheran ethical witness to develop a thought-provoking analysis of the roots, reach and contemporary context of Lutheran social teaching on abortion.
“Dr. Riswold has a knack for integrating our Lutheran Reformation theological tradition with challenges of our day that allows for readers to more deeply engage with challenging topics, in challenging dialogues, in the midst of challenging times,” said Bishop Amy Current of the Southeastern Iowa Synod-ELCA. “She invites her audience into conversation rather than creating polarization. I am eager for this important series as it welcomes individuals, groups, congregations, synods and the church into deeper and renewed conversations around topics that matter.”
“ReEngaging ELCA Social Teaching on Abortion” was published by Augsburg Fortress Press. The book also contains discussion questions and a curated list of resources for additional reading.
