Four Wartburg College students and a staff member were honored for their commitment to service as part of the school’s annual Saint Elizabeth Week celebration.

Macy Harris, Mackenzie Barth, Addie Nabholz and Brooke Best received the Saint Elizabeth Award for Service, which recognizes students who exemplify a commitment to service and desire to live a life that embodies the Wartburg mission. Marissa Gates, area coordinator, received the Pastor Larry Trachte Award for Service, given to faculty or staff who embody his enthusiasm, support, dedication and overall commitment to Wartburg’s mission of service. Trachte is a Wartburg graduate and former campus pastor.

Harris was nominated for her work through The Residence service-learning suite, volunteering at the Northeast Iowa Food Bank and visiting Bartels, where she spends time with the residents.

Barth has participated in a mission trip to Indonesia and wants to continue mission work overseas after graduation.

Nabholz is a resident assistant, member of Knights Who Serve, training a service dog and “has a true heart for the community,” according to her nominator.

Best also volunteers at Bartels with her suitemates in The Residence. She is on the Social Work Club and SAFE executive teams, involved with Best Buddies, on the leadership team for Kantorei and was elected to Student Senate where she is the health and wellness liaison.

Gates’ nominators said she embodies what it means to go above and beyond for her students.

“When asked to be our adviser for our service trip, Marissa was excited and passionate about helping those facing food insecurity. Having her join the team allowed us to feel secure and supported,” wrote a student on one of the three service trips Gates has led in the last 15 months. “The trust and faith she gives student leaders to plan these trips showcases her leadership style and her patience. She helps guide students while allowing us to make and learn from our mistakes.”
