Wartburg College students and recent graduates received more than 60 individual awards at the annual Iowa College Media Association ceremony held virtually on Thursday, Feb. 18.

The Trumpet, the college’s student-run newspaper, was named the News Media Organization for the second time in two years, and KWAR, the student-run radio station, was named the Radio Station of the Year. The Trumpet staff also earned first place in Best COVID-19 Coverage.

Individual awards were given to the following students and recent graduates.

Silvia Oakland, The Trumpet’s editor-in-chief, earned a first-place finish in Best Feature Story, Best Page 1 Design and Best Use of Social Media in the news media division. She also earned third-place honors for Best Social Justice Coverage in the media division and Best Feature Package in the radio division. She earned an honorable mention in Best News Photograph, Best Interactive Content and Best Staff Editorial in the news division and Best News Programming in the television division.

Annika Wall, The Trumpet’s creative director until her graduation in December, earned first place in the news division for Best Sports Story, Best Page 1 Design, Best Graphic/Illustration, Best Print Design and Best Use of Social Media, and second place for Best Magazine/Special Section Cover and Best Print Design. She also earned third place in Best Sports Photograph, Best Multimedia Slideshow (for her work on a capstone documentary), Best Social Justice Coverage and Best Interactive Content in the news division.

In the radio division, she also earned first place for Best News Programming, Best Long-form Package and Best Feature Package. Wall also earned both second place and an honorable mention in Best Sports Broadcast. For her work in television, Wall earned second place in Best News Programming and Best Sportscasting and third place in Best News, Public Affairs, or Sports Storytelling.

Wall earned an honorable mention for Best Investigative News Story and Best Staff Editorial in the news division; Best Feature Package in radio; and Best Newscast and Best Sportscasting in television.

Jenna Brannaman earned first place for Best Multimedia Slide Show and Best Short Documentary for her work on the capstone documentary “Beyond the Battlefield.”

Hannah Fox earned first place for Best Multimedia Slide Show and Best Short Documentary for her work on the capstone documentary “Beyond the Battlefield.”

Matt Ohl earned first place for Best Multimedia Slide Show and Best Short Documentary for his work on the capstone documentary “Beyond the Battlefield.” He also earned second place in Best Promo, Commercial, PSA and third place in Best Short Film.

Megan Stephenson earned first place for Best Multimedia Slide Show and Best Short Documentary for her work on the capstone documentary “Beyond the Battlefield.”

Josh Voigt earned first place for Best Multimedia Slide Show and Best Short Documentary for his work on the capstone documentary “Beyond the Battlefield.” He also earned second place for Best Promo, Commercial, PSA and third place in Best Experimental Video and Best Short Film.

Gabrielle Olejniczak earned second place for Best Multimedia Slide Show for her work on the capstone documentary “In the Archives: The Kaye Russo Frazer Story.”

Hope Pearson earned second place for Best Multimedia Slide Show for her work on the capstone documentary “In the Archives: The Kaye Russo Frazer Story.”

Ryley Seymour earned second place for Best Multimedia Slide Show for his work on the capstone documentary “In the Archives: The Kaye Russo Frazer Story.”

Taylor Webb earned second place for Best Multimedia Slide Show for her work on the capstone documentary “In the Archives: The Kaye Russo Frazer Story.”

Emily McCalla earned third place for Best Multimedia Slide Show for her work on the capstone documentary “Sowing Seeds: The Hilda Fedeler Story.”

Courtney Moser earned third place for Best Multimedia Slide Show for her work on the capstone documentary “Sowing Seeds: The Hilda Fedeler Story.” She also earned second place in Best News Programming in the television division.

Lauren O’Brian earned third place for Best Multimedia Slide Show for her work on the capstone documentary “Sowing Seeds: The Hilda Fedeler Story.”

Ryan Reebenacker earned first place for Best Page 1 Design, Best Online Video and Best Use of Social Media in the news division. He also placed third in Best Headline Writing, Best Print Design, Best Social Justice Coverage and Best Multimedia Slide Show for his work on the capstone documentary “Sowing Seeds: The Hilda Fedeler Story.” In the radio division, Reebenacker earned first in Best Feature Package and Best Sports Broadcast. He also received an honorable mention in Best Sports Broadcast. Reebenacker also took home first place and second place in Best Sportscasting and first place in Best Promo, Commercial, PSA as well as second in Best News, Public Affairs, or Sports Storytelling in the television division.

William Wallace earned third place for Best Multimedia Slide Show for his work on the capstone documentary “Sowing Seeds: The Hilda Fedeler Story.” He also earned third place in the radio division for Best PSA.

Rachel Green earned first place for Best Profile Story in the news division.

Alexa Ganzeveld earned first place in Best Page 1 Design. She also received an honorable mention in Best Headline Writing.

Kayla Marthaler earned first place in Best Page 1 Design. She also received an honorable mention in Best Staff Editorial.

Lauren Wisdom earned first place in Best Page 1 Design and third place in Best Social Justice Coverage.

Katie Hirv, Knight Wire manager, earned first place for Best Print Design and Best Use of Social Media in the news division. She also earned third place for Best Social Justice Coverage.

Nathan Stephany earned first place for Best Use of Social Media and third place for Best Interactive Content in the news division as well as an honorable mention in Best Feature Story. He also earned second place for Best Entertainment Storytelling and an honorable mention for Best Newscast and Best News Programming in the television division.

Nicole Hasek earned first place in Best Use of Social Media and honorable mention in Best Staff Editorial.

Leticia Silva earned second place in Best Air Personality and an honorable mention for Best Show (Entertainment) in the radio division.

Madison Freeland earned second place in Best Promo and Best News Programming in the radio division as well as third place in Best Air Personality and Best Newscast.

Anjela Waterman earned first place in Best Promo and Best Show (Entertainment) in the radio division.

Henry Hahn earned third place in Best Promo and third place in Best PSA in the radio division.

Jackie Paz earned second place in Best PSA in the radio division.

Ethan Pfaltzgraff earned second place in Best Newscast and third place in Best News Programming in the radio division. In the television division, he earned third place in Best News Programming and Best Entertainment Storytelling.

Joshua Hamlyn earned second place in Best Sports Broadcast and third place in Best Sports Program in the radio division. In the television division, he earned third in Best News Programming and an honorable mention in Best Sportscasting.

Alex Economos received an honorable mention in Best Sports Program in the radio division.

Alex Buchheim received an honorable mention in Best Sports Program in the radio division.

Peyton Meisner received first place in Best Sports Broadcast in the radio division and first in Best Sportscasting in television.

James Mossman earned first place for Best Show (Entertainment) in the radio division.

Kennedy Hiles received an honorable mention for Best Show (Entertainment) in the radio division.

Lydia Revier earned second and third place in Best News Programming in television.

Liam Easley earned third place for Best Social Justice Coverage in the media division.

Student media advisers are Ron Johnson (Cedar Valley Today), Pam Ohrt (KWAR) and Suzanne Behnke (Trumpet). Penni Pier, the department chair, oversees the Capstone program.

ICMA is made up of 12 Iowa colleges. The annual conference is held in conjunction with the Iowa Newspaper Association’s conference.
