A $7,500 grant from the Max & Helen Guernsey Charitable Foundation will help provide scholarships to area high school students attending Wartburg College’s Leadership & Service Summit in the Cedar Valley.

The Leadership & Service Summit provides opportunities for leadership development through service-learning and community engagement for high school students and the college students who participate as lead mentors. As part of the program, participants execute a service-learning project in their home communities during the following school year and reflect upon the outcomes within the context of their lives as active citizens. Students who successfully complete the program can earn transferable college credit. Those who choose to attend Wartburg also will qualify for a scholarship.

“We are so appreciative to the Guernsey Foundation for their support of LSS. This grant allows the opportunity for funding to local participants, furthering their opportunities to engage with Wartburg, give back to the Cedar Valley and their local communities, as well as grow as leaders,” said Ashley Lang, LSS director.

More than 200 students, many from Northeast Iowa, have already participated in the program. Projects have included a high school service club, culture fair celebrating diversity, a tutoring program for middle and high school students, a mental health awareness and suicide prevention support program and school recycling program.
