Meredith Willson, the Mason City native known best for “The Music Man,” will be featured during the Keep on Learning community education series at Wartburg College beginning Thursday, April 2.

Don Meyer, senior gift planner at Wartburg, will discuss the trials and successes of Willson — a musician, composer, movie producer, radio personality and hometown hero who never forgot his boyhood home no matter how far away his work took him.

Classes continue April 16, 23 and 30 in the Heritage Room of Saemann Student Center. Coffee will be served at 9 a.m., followed by the class from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Parking is available near Saemann Student Center for those entering campus by Wartburg Boulevard.

In addition to “The Music Man,” Willson penned two other musical plays, including “The Unsinkable Molly Brown.” Other recognizable works include the songs “You and I,” “May the Good Lord Bless and Keep You,” “It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas,” “Seventy-Six Trombones” and “Till There Was You.”

Pre-registration is not required. The first class of each session is free; a $30 fee due at the second class covers the rest of the course.
