Wartburg College music students, alumni and community members will perform the comedic opera,  “The Pirates of Penzance,” March 19-21, on the college’s Neumann Auditorium stage.

W.S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan’s beloved show, under the direction of Wartburg music professor Brian Pfaltzgraff, begins nightly at 7:30 p.m. An additional performance Saturday, March 21, begins at 3 p.m.

The Thursday and Saturday evening performances will feature Wartburg alumni Brian Stinar, a 1993 graduate who performs and teaches in the Denver, Colorado, area; Mari Voelker Sayler, a 2008 graduate who performs regularly in the U.S. and Canada; and Rachel Vickers, a 2009 graduate who performs with the Minnesota Opera.

William Earl, Wartburg professor of theater, steps to the front of the stage to join the cast as a modern Major General, and Travis Toliver, director of the Waverly Area Chamber of Commerce, will sing the role of the soft-hearted pirate king.

The performances Friday evening and Saturday afternoon will feature Wartburg students in the lead roles.

Tickets for the Wartburg Artist Series show are $10 to $20 and available online at www.wartburg.edu/artist, by calling 319-352-8691 or at the Saemann Student Center Ticket Office weekdays from noon to 4 p.m. Youth tickets are $5.

“The Pirates of Penzance” is made possible by a partnership between the Wartburg College Artist Series, Wartburg College Opera Workshop and Wartburg Players.

“We are excited to offer to our supporters the community and collegiate effort that this production represents, as a part of this final Artist Series season,” Pfaltzgraff said.
