Master Sgt. Susan Rider, a Cedar Falls native and trumpeter with “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band, will perform and teach at the Wartburg Trumpet Festival, March 12-13.

Rider, a 1985 Northern University High School graduate, and Amy Gilreath, professor of trumpet at Illinois State University, will be the guest performers and clinicians at the fifth annual trumpet festival, which brings together area high school musicians for workshops. The festival includes two concerts open to the public.

Rider; Gilreath; Scott Muntefering, assistant professor of music education; Suzanne Torkelson, professor of music; and Jim Vaux, music lecturer, will perform in a recital Thursday, March 12.

A finale concert will feature the guest artists, Wartburg Trumpet Choir and high school trumpet choir Friday, March 13. The Wartburg Trumpet Choir has been invited to perform at the International Trumpet Guild Conference this May. Freewill donations for the Northeast Iowa Food Bank will be accepted..

Both events begin at 7 p.m. in the Wartburg Chapel and are free.

Rider, who earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Northern Iowa in 1989 and graduate degrees from Indiana University, joined the Marine band in 1997. She also has performed with the Midland-Odessa Symphony & Chorale in Texas, Owensboro Symphony Orchestra in Kentucky and Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra and Columbus Indiana Philharmonic in Indiana.

She taught studio trumpet in Odessa and at Purdue University and was an associate instructor at Indiana University.

Gilreath is an international soloist and principal trumpet with the Illinois Symphony Orchestra, Illinois Chamber Orchestra and Sinfonia de Camera. She co-founded the Stiletto Brass Quintet, a professional musical group that has performed on several national tours.
