Michael Bechtel will talk one-room schoolhouses, online education and scaly creatures during the Keep on Learning community education series at Wartburg College.

Bechtel, assistant professor of biology education, will explore the evolution of the public education system Jan. 8 and 15 in a discussion-type format.

“I have done some research, listened to my elders and had Wartburg students teach in the Wapsie Amish schools, but there is still a lot for me to learn,” he said. “I hope to get our Waverly natives to participate during these sessions.”

Then, Jan. 22 and 29, participants will learn about reptiles and amphibians to “gain a greater appreciation of these amazing creatures.” Bechtel will bring reptiles and eggs for a hands-on experience.

Coffee will be served at 9 a.m., followed by the class from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. All classes are in the Heritage Room of Saemann Student Center. Parking is available near the student center for those entering campus by Wartburg Boulevard.

Pre-registration is not required. The first class is free; a $30 fee due at the second class covers the rest of the sessions.
