Connor Koppin, a 2013 Wartburg graduate, recently won the inaugural Young Composers Competition sponsored by The Capital Hearings, a D.C.-based a cappella ensemble.

The group will premiere Koppin’s composition, “There will come Soft Rains,” in Washington Sept. 27.

“I composed ‘There will come Soft Rains’ because I believe that this piece captures the essence of the natural world while seeking to remind us as humans what it would be like to live in a place free of violence or malice,” Koppin said. “I am very humbled to be chosen as the winner of The Capital Hearings’ Young Composers Competition, and I cannot wait to hear the piece brought to life by this unique ensemble.”

Featuring text written by American poet Sara Teasdale in the aftermath of World War I, the piece describes how the earth revives itself in the wake of human conflict.

The competition, which drew entries from 22 states, the District of Columbia and two Canadian provinces, was open to American and Canadian composers 40 and younger.

“This competitive composition contest is a testament to Connor’s innate musical abilities and work ethic,” said Lee Nelson, Wartburg’s director of choral activities. “His compositions continue to grow and evolve in new and exciting ways, which the contest committee appreciated. I couldn’t be more proud of Connor. As an educator, there is nothing more rewarding than seeing your student succeed.”

In addition to this honor, Koppin’s work has been published by MorningStar Music Publishers and ESC Publishing. Koppin now lives in Ames and is director of choral activities at Roland-Story High School in Story City.
