Wartburg College junior Jenna Manders received the Gordon Mack Award for Student Leadership at the 10th annual Cedar Valley Nonprofit Awards, April 16.

Manders, a business administration and sociology major from Dubuque, has served as the Teen Trust student director since May 2012. Teen Trust, a Community Foundation of Northeast Iowa program, is a model for youth philanthropy. Each year, the board of high school students allocates $10,000 to nonprofit agencies in Black Hawk County.

“As a high school student I was involved with YAPPERS, the youth philanthropy board for the Community Foundation of Greater Dubuque,” Manders said. “After my first semester at Wartburg, I felt like there was a void in my life where philanthropy stood.”

She discovered Teen Trust and was encouraged to apply for the student director position.

“Mentoring these 50 area high school students has been an honor,” she said. “Getting involved in giving back at a young age is essential. I am honored to be chosen for the Gordon Mack Award, as there are many young nonprofit professionals just as deserving.”

Manders also serves as the Wartburg College Service Trips student director and assistant director of Wartburg College Dance Marathon.

The University of Northern Iowa Nonprofit Leadership Alliance Student Association organized the award luncheon. The Nonprofit Leadership Alliance is a national certification program that prepares students to become the next generation of leaders in the nonprofit sector.
