Mahzabe Malik came to Wartburg College in the middle of a seemingly never-ending winter.

Yet the Pakistani exchange student — who is on campus for just one term — hasn’t complained. She has soaked up every snow-filled moment in the United States as a student through IREX, an international nonprofit promoting cultural understanding.

As part of the program, Malik will give a presentation on Pakistan Thursday, March 27, at 6:30 p.m. at the Waverly Public Library. The presentation is part of Wartburg’s Culture Week, an opportunity for the college’s 174 international students to provide a glimpse of life in their 59 countries.

“I want to represent Pakistan not just as a country, but as a community,” said Malik, who is studying to be a veterinarian. “I want people to think about Pakistan. It is a developing country. It is a good country, but it has some problems.”

Malik, of the Balochistan province in southwestern Pakistan, will discuss the cultural, political, and economic differences among the country’s four provinces.

“We have a very diverse culture there. Every part of Pakistan is different from the other,” she said. “I notice here the dressing is similar all over the U.S. The food is similar and basically the language is the same. It is not like that back home.”

Helen Leong, director of international student services, said the program will be an opportunity for Americans to learn more about Pakistan, including some controversial issues.

“Our governments have a mixed relationship at times. We do drone strikes across the border in Pakistan. This is hugely controversial there and in the U.S.,” Leong said. “This opportunity to meet and discuss culture, as well as politics, with someone who represents that country is a great opportunity. She is not a member of the government but she is a cultural ambassador and she is so passionate about sharing her culture and learning about others.”
