Wartburg College’s 174 international students will provide a glimpse of life in their 59 countries during the annual Culture Week, March 23-April 3.

Culture Week activities will be bookended by its two most popular events — the Culture Fair and the Culture Show. “Culture Week is a chance for international students to showcase their interests and unique talents,” said Helen Leong, director of international student services, “and for the Wartburg and Waverly community to celebrate our differences.”

The Culture Fair kicks off the celebration with booths showcasing the various nations and students in traditional dress. Samples of international cuisine also will be available at the event Sunday, March 23, 6:30-8:30 p.m., in Knights Ballroom in Saemann Student Center. A donation of $5 per adult is suggested.

“At Culture Fair, the students represent their country, culture and the geography of their home. We talk about what makes us unique, including traditional practices. We wear our national clothes and decorate our table with special items from our home country,” said Mullohoji Juraev from Tajikistan, a second-year international relations major.

Culture Show performances will feature music and dance during a 90-minute show in Neumann Auditorium, Saturday, March 29, at 7:30 p.m. A donation of $5 per adult is suggested.

“We have many exciting events during Culture Week, including a ‘Coffee and Teas from Around the World’ where students from Turkey, China, Kenya, and more will present the cultural significance of how that beverage is prepared and share some with attendees,” Leong said.

“We also have Dr. Joyce Boss discussing the world phenomenon of anime, a panel discussion on LGBTQ issues around the world, and a student presenting on Pakistan. There is something for everyone to enjoy.”
