Anneliese Heider Tisdale will provide her perspective on life as a young girl in Nazi Germany during a talk at Wartburg College Sunday, March 30.

Tisdale — a Cedar Rapids resident, author and retired teacher — will speak at the James W. Lynes Jr. Memorial Lecture in History, hosted by the Phi Alpha Theta history honor society, at 1 p.m. in Whitehouse Business Center 214.

Her memoir, “Christmas Trees Lit the Sky,” recounts her fears as a compulsory member in Hitler’s Youth Girls League as a preteen and life in Munich during the war with a brother stationed on the Eastern Front. The title recalls red and green flares used to illuminate the sky for Allied bombers, reminiscent of Christmas tree lights.

Tisdale moved to Iowa in 1947 to marry a U.S. serviceman. She has bachelor and master’s degrees from the University of Iowa and taught foreign languages in the Cedar Rapids School District for 30 years.

She will read a chapter from her book and answer questions. Signed copies of the book will be available for purchase. Refreshments will be served.
