Wartburg College will host 200 high school musicians at the 44th annual Meistersinger Honor Band Festival with a concert Sunday, Feb. 2.

Students who excel on their instruments from schools in Iowa, Illinois, Wisconsin and Minnesota will perform at the 2 p.m. concert Sunday in Neumann Auditorium. It is open to the public and free of charge.

The three bands will be:

  • The Senior High Band (grades 10-12) conducted by Dr. Michael Golemo, director of bands at Iowa State University, will perform works by Girolamo Frescobaldi, Frank Ticheli and John Philip Sousa.
  • The Ninth Grade Band conducted by Rob Medd, band director at Iowa City West High School, will perform works by Vaughn Williams, Philip Sparke and Karl King.
  • The Wartburg College Concert Bands conducted by Dr. Craig Hancock will perform Eric Whitacre’s “Godzilla Eats Las Vegas.”

The concert is the culmination of a two-day festival with rehearsals beginning on Saturday.
