Wartburg College students will honor civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. with service projects and special events during MLK Week, Jan. 19-24.

Ten service projects are planned for Monday, Jan. 20, on and off campus, ranging from working with Habitat for Humanity in Waterloo to making fleece-tie “blankets of love” for children at the Bremwood Lutheran Home in Waverly. 

Among the events open to the public, Pennsylvania-based diversity consultant Marvin G. Worthy will discuss “Diversity: A Matter of Perspective,” Tuesday, Jan. 21, at 11:30 a.m., in McCaskey Lyceum. Worthy, a former college associate dean of students, has conducted diversity training for higher education, corporations and organizations “to build cross-cultural relationships.” 

Panel discussions will focus on “How Has His Dream Expanded?” Tuesday, 7 p.m., Whitehouse Business Center 214, and “Intersecting Identities,” Thursday, Jan. 23, 11:30 a.m., Wartburg Chapel Commons.

Other events include:

  • “42,” the acclaimed movie about baseball star Jackie Robinson, Sunday, Jan. 19, 8 p.m., McCaskey Lyceum, no charge.
  • The Rev. Chuck Infelt, Waverly mayor and former president of Chicago-based Holy Family Ministries, speaking at the MLK Chapel, Wednesday, Jan. 22, 10:15 a.m., Wartburg Chapel.
  • Voices of Praise, the Wartburg gospel choir, performing at the MLK Eucharist, Wednesday, 9 p.m., Wartburg Chapel.
  • The Outlet showcasing Wartburg student music and art talent, Thursday, Jan. 23, 8 p.m., McCaskey Lyceum.
  • Dr. Jenny McBride, assistant professor of religion who has been active in helping the homeless and other endeavors in King’s hometown of Atlanta, speaking on “The Radical Legacy of MLK: Beyond Service Projects,” Friday, Jan. 24, 4 p.m., McCoy rooms.
