Japanese folklore recital set for Jan. 10 is postponed
January 3, 2014
This concert has been postponed due to illness. Its rescheduling is pending.
Wartburg College professors Joyce Boss and Eric Wachmann will perform a recital focusing on Japanese folklore Friday, Jan. 10
The two will present “Kumoijishi: The Lion Above the Clouds,” featuring traditional Japanese shakuhachi music performed by Wachmann alongside Japanese folktales read by Boss. The hourlong event in the Wartburg Chapel starts at 7 p.m. and is free and open to the public.
The shakuhachi, an end-blown flute, is a traditional instrument from Japan. It began as a folk instrument and became a tool for spirituality, particularly in the practice of Zen Buddhism. It has been an important part of traditional classical ensemble music in Japan since the mid-1800s.
Boss, a professor of English, teaches literature, myth, and cultural studies, including courses on Asia and Japan. Her current research focuses on Japanese folklore, religion and popular culture.
Wachmann, a professor of music, teaches clarinet and music theory. The principal clarinet with the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Symphony, he has performed as a soloist and ensemble member across North America, Europe and Asia.
