WAVERLY — The College Achievement Program Plus (CAP+) is seeking students to work as mentors in a year-long program to assist first-year students.

CAP+ is a grant-funded extension of the CAP program already offered on campus. CAP+ was created to reach out to students who identify as American ethnic, low income, and/or are first-generation college students.

The program requires at least 15 student mentors. Mentors must be second-, third-, or fourth-year students in good academic standing. Mentors will be asked to connect with two first-year students and help motivate and guide them to a successful and rich college experience.

Students can earn $1,200-$1,400 during the 2013-14 school year. In addition to meeting with first-year protégés, mentors also will be required to attend gatherings and social events with other program participants.

Mentors must apply for the program no later than Wednesday, Aug. 28. Mentor training is Sunday and Monday, Sept 1-2.

CAP+ can accommodate 30 first-year protégés. Protégés will connect weekly with their mentors, who will help them transition to college and meet their goals. The protégés will also receive extra support from the CAP+ coordinator and fellow first-year participants.

The program will host events to explore topics like time management, college transition issues, campus resources, getting involved, managing money, and goal-setting. Protégés also can earn up to $400 toward the cost of textbooks.

The deadline to register is Friday, Sept. 6.
