Wartburg Community Symphony will conclude its Diamond Jubilee season Saturday, April 13, with the most musicians it has assembled during the concert year.

Musicians from the Twin Cities, Decorah, Mason City, the Waverly area, and Wartburg College faculty and students will perform at 7:30 p.m. in Neumann Auditorium.

“I look forward to conducting this talented group of musicians,” said Dr. Daniel Kaplunas, music director and conductor.

The concert will highlight the solo talents of two Wartburg vocalists — tenor Dr. Brian Pfaltzgraff  and soprano Dr. Jennifer Larson — who will sing several of Richard Strauss’ best-loved pieces.

Pfaltzgraff has chosen five songs from Strauss’ earlier years, including “Tomorrow, ” which he composed and gave to his fiancé the morning of their wedding.

Larson will sing Strauss’s four last songs completed in 1948. Strauss’s wife was so overcome with grief at his death that she died only months later. The songs were first performed days after her death.

“The orchestral songs by Richard Strauss are possibly the most beautiful musical masterpieces ever composed,” Kaplunas said. “Hearing Dr. Pfaltzgraff and Dr. Larson perform these wonderful works with orchestra will be a special treat.”

The concert begins with the “Prelude to Lohengrin” by German composer Richard Wagner.

Concert tickets are $15 for an adult and $5 for a student at the door. Wartburg students with college IDs are free.

A reception sponsored by The Accel Group will follow.

Memberships for the 2013-14 season will be available in the Neumann Auditorium Lobby after 6:45 p.m., during intermission, and following the concert. Memberships begin at $150 and can include a complimentary family season package for up to two adult and two youth tickets for each of the four concerts. Members get priority reserved seats and a tax-deductible gift credit.

The symphony will use a different ticketing process in 2013-14. Persons not wishing to join the Symphony Association, but wishing to purchase tickets, can do so after July 15 through the Wartburg College ticket office in Saemann Student Center. Tickets also are available at the door at each concert.
