Wartburg College has been named to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for the seventh consecutive year and for the third time “with distinction.”
The honor roll, administered by the Corporation for National and Community Service since 2006, recognizes institutions of higher education for their support of volunteering, service-learning and civic engagement.
“Wartburg lifts up service and leadership as two of its guiding principles,” said Dr. Dan Kittle, director of Wartburg’s Center for Community Engagement. “This award does more than recognize people and projects, it reminds us that the work of educating students at Wartburg is ultimately about positively impacting communities.”
Wartburg students participate in various community service efforts:
- On service trips throughout the nation during three school-year breaks.
- On Cedar Valley projects during Martin Luther King Jr. and St. Elizabeth weeks on campus.
- Overseeing the Holiday Shoppe in December, providing gifts for children of Bremer County low-income families.
- Volunteering year-round at the Waverly Health Center, Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community, Bremwood Lutheran Children’s Home and at other nonprofit agencies.
- As mentors during the High School Leadership Institute when rising high school seniors develop community service projects.
- As part of Wartburg’s Community Builders, a multigenerational program that develops projects to support communities at home and abroad.
