During a week when the annual Graven Award was presented, the Graven family continued to give back to Wartburg College.

Dr. Stanley and Mavis Graven, both Wartburg graduates, are contributing their academic works to the Vogel Library, while their son, Dr. Kendall Graven, who has a family practice in Salem, Ore., gave a series of lectures on health-care topics.

The Gravens presented the annual Graven Award to Iowa District Court Judge James Ellefson of Marshalltown, a Wartburg graduate, on Tuesday, Feb. 19. The award, given to a person demonstrating “a strong sense of Christian calling,” is named for Stanley’s parents, the late Judge Henry N. and Helen Graven, natives of Greene.

Karen Lehmann, information literacy librarian at the Vogel Library, said the donated Graven Collection of academic works would be valuable for all students, but primarily those studying psychology, education, biology, religion and social work.

“There is a hands-on element to having some classics used by experts in the field,” she said.

Stanley had a distinguished academic career in pediatrics, neonatal and perinatal care at the University of Wisconsin, University of South Dakota, University of Missouri, and University of South Florida.  Mavis earned a master’s degree in infant and child development.

Dr. Kendall Graven gave a series of lectures to biology and pre-medicine students on health-care topics.

A graduate of Pacific Lutheran University and the University of Missouri School of Medicine, he was a doctor in the U.S. Air Force before entering private practice in 1999.
