The business of science and the science of business will come together Thursday, Feb. 7, at Wartburg College.

Business and science students will hear Susan Hertzberg, president and chief executive officer at Boston Heart Diagnostics in Framingham, Mass., discuss “Leading a Personalized Medicine Health Care Startup for a Venture-Backed Firm.”

The public also is invited to the session, which begins at 11:30 a.m. in McCaskey Lyceum in Saemann Student Center.

Boston Heart Diagnostics, a start-up financed by Bain Capital, works to improve assessment and management of cardiovascular disease patients.

“Boston Heart’s services fall within the sweet spot of the changing health-care environment, using outcomes-based medicine to save health dollars and improve treatment for patients,” said Gloria Campbell, associate professor of business administration and Hagemann Professor in Business. “They have over 150 employees and are growing rapidly.”

Hertzberg has been with Boston Heart Diagnostics since July 2010. She has more than 25 years of experience in the diagnostics and health-care services industry with former executive roles in sales, marketing and operations.

Dr. Julie Kliegl, assistant professor of business of administration, worked with Hertzberg at Quest Diagnostics and was influential in bringing her to Wartburg, using enrichment funds available through the Hagemann Professorship.

Hertzberg also serves on the board of directors for TheraCare, a private rehabilitation and developmental service organization focusing on improving special-education needs.

Campbell said business students will learn about the strategies behind acquiring venture-capital funding from organizations such as Bain Capital, and science students will learn more about the applications of DNA coding in personalized medicine.
