Some of Northeast Iowa’s finest musicians will be featured in the next concert of the Castle Chamber Series: Music in the Afternoon at Wartburg College Sunday, Jan. 27.

“Schubertiade,” a program of music for voice and piano, will be performed at 2 p.m. in the college’s Castle Room in Saemann Student Center, inspired by gatherings of friends of 19th century Viennese composer Franz Schubert to celebrate his music.

The “voices” will be Gary Moss, a Luther College professor of voice, and Wartburg counterpart Jennifer Larson. They will be joined by Wartburg pianists Suzanne Torkelson and Ted Reuter and clarinetist Eric Wachmann in a diverse program of lieder that captures the breadth of Schubert’s witty trios to sublime settings of great poems.

This is the second in a series of four concerts reminiscent of intimate 19th century gatherings, when friends would listen to music and discuss it with the performers.

Two other concerts are scheduled:

  • Feb. 17 — Pianist Sean Botkin will lead a program of chamber and solo works.
  • March 10 — Trio 826, a string trio led by University of Northern Iowa professor and Waterloo-Cedar Falls Symphony violist Julia Bullard, will perform.

All Castle Chamber Series concerts begin at 2 p.m. Admission is $5 and tickets are available at the door. Students with valid ID are admitted free of charge.
