Noted illustrator Gary Kelley and writer Scott Cawelti will explore the impact of movies during the January’s Keep on Learning course at Wartburg College.

Kelley, an award-winning artist, and Cawelti, University of Northern Iowa professor emeritus who taught literature, writing and film, will examine “The Power of Movies: Visual and Verbal,” Thursday mornings, Jan. 10, 17, 24 and 31 in the Heritage and St. Elizabeth rooms of Saemann Student Center. Coffee will be served at 9 a.m., followed by the class session from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.

Kelley and Cawelti will show clips from eight films with powerful meanings emerging from visuals and language. Each class will focus on two films.

Kelley has done illustrations for such clients as the New Yorker, Rolling Stone, Playboy, Atlantic Monthly, Time, GQ, CBS Records, the National Football League, and major publishers and advertising agencies. His work has been honored by the New York Society of Illustrators, National Booksellers Association, Print Magazine, New York Art Directors Show and the Los Angeles Society of Illustrators among others. Cawelti, a longtime columnist for the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier, taught at UNI for 40 years. He is the author of the fact-based novel, “Brother’s Blood,” about the 1975 Jerry Mark murders in Cedar Falls; edited “The Complete Poetry of James Hearst,” and put Hearst’s prose to music in his album, “Landscape Iowa.” More information is available at www.scottcawelti.com.

Kelley and Cawelti are Cedar Falls residents and received their bachelor’s degrees from UNI in art and vocal music education, respectively. Cawelti earned a master’s degree in English from UNI and a doctorate in modern letters from the University of Iowa.

Participants can attend the first class of each session free of charge. A $30 fee is payable at the second session. Parking is available in the lots and on the streets directly east of Saemann Student Center.
