The second season of the Castle Chamber Series: Music in the Afternoon at Wartburg College will begin Sunday, Nov. 18.

The four-concert series brings together some of the finest musicians in the Cedar Valley and beyond in the Castle Room of Saemann Student Center to recapture the intimacy of 19th century recitals, where friends would gather to listen to fine music and discuss it with the performers. All performances are at 2 p.m.

The season premiere features the Dubuque Chamber Players with music for piano, oboe and bassoon, performed by Alan Huckleberry, associate professor of piano at the University of Iowa; Heather Huckleberry, adjunct professor of oboe at Clarke University, and Marcia Martin, an Iowa City bassoonist who has performed with the Rochester Philharmonic, Buffalo Philharmonic, the Syracuse Symphony and the National Repertory Orchestra.

The diverse program will span four centuries of music — from an 18th century baroque trio sonata to contemporary jazz-inspired piece composed in 2006.

The other three Castle Series concerts will be:

  • Jan. 27 — Dr. Jennifer Larson leading a “Schubertiade,” art songs inspired by gatherings celebrating Schubert’s music during his lifetime.
  • Feb. 17 — Pianist Sean Botkin leading a program of chamber and solo works.
  • March 10 —Trio 826, a string trio led by University of Northern Iowa professor and Waterloo-Cedar Falls Symphony violist Julia Bullard, performing.

General admission is $5. Tickets are available at the door. Students with a valid ID are free.
