Five Cedar Valley artists will chronicle the conceptual development of their works in “Drawing as Idea,” opening Friday, Sept. 7, at Wartburg College.

Gary Kelley, Arthur Frick, Dan Hatala, Scott Hudson and Larry Kurtz contributed sculpture proposals, architectural and product designs and illustrations to the exhibit in the Waldemar A. Schmidt Gallery in the Bachman Fine Arts Center.

“The idea is to have architects, sculptors and others share how drawing can be at the service of bigger ideas,” said Zhijian “Alice” Wang, gallery director.

Kelly, an internationally known illustrator, is providing sketches alongside printed publications to show how he develops and composes his work through thumbnail sketches.

His illustrations have appeared in the New Yorker, Rolling Stone, Playboy, Atlantic Monthly, Time, Newsweek and GQ, and his clients ranging from CBS Records to the National Football League.

Frick, retired chair of the Wartburg art department, will display his drawings of the Wartburg Medal, given annually to honorees at the college’s Opening Convocation, and the Wartburg Mace used on ceremonial occasions.

Hatala is known for his “Cruisin’ Goods” illustrations of hot rods, motorcycles and other vehicles as well as architecture. His project drawings for clients will be exhibited.

Hudson, former director of the art gallery, has earned recognition as a sculptor and watercolor painter. He is displaying a large conceptual drawing, two color renderings of a sculpture and the sculpture model.

Kurtz, a partner in AHTS Architects in Waterloo, will exhibit architectural drawings. Kurtz recently designed the Waterloo Boat House on the Cedar River.

The gallery is open weekdays, 9 a.m.-7 p.m. or by appointment. The exhibit runs through Oct. 19. Admission is free. A reception for the artists will be Friday, Sept. 14, 6-8 p.m. in the gallery.
