School may be out for summer, but the Snow Valley Iowa Basketball Camp is in session at Wartburg College for 400-500 youths per week.

Snow Valley Iowa — now in its 19th year — alternates between four-day sessions for boys and girls, grades 5-12, with an emphasis on basketball fundamentals. It attracts 500 boys and 400 girls to their respective sessions in the Wartburg-Waverly Sports & Wellness Center. The campers stay in Wartburg residence halls.

Snow Valley Iowa is co-directed by Don Showalter, the coach at Mid-Prairie High School in Wellman who has 550 career wins and twice led the US Under 16 and US Under 17 teams to world championships, and Jerry Slykhuis, the former Cedar Falls High coach, a member of the Iowa High School Hall of Fame and a two-time state coach of the year.

Past Snow Valley clinicians have included former Army and NBA head coach Tates Locke; former St. John’s assistant Mike Dunlap, the recently named head coach of the Charlotte Hornets; longtime NBA scout Herb Livsey; Toronto Raptors assistant coach Tom Sterner, and Tom Budenhozer, the lead assistant coach of the San Antonio Spurs.

The four Snow Valley Iowa sessions run from July 15 to Aug. 1.
