Three high school seniors who are students of Wartburg professors took the first three places in an audition for a piano scholarship Friday.

Ashley Fruhling, of Linn-Mar High School in Marion, a student of Dr. Suzanne Torkelson, and Shane McFadden, of Don Bosco High School in Gilbertville, and Rachel Frantsen, of Waverly-Shell Rock High School, students of Dr. Ted Reuter, took first through third places, respectively, in the Northeast Area Music Teachers Association scholarship competition at the Hearst Center for the Arts in Cedar Falls.

Dr. John Holstad, University of Northern Iowa emeritus professor, adjudicated

The students’ repertoire included “Scherzo No. 3 in C minor” by Chopin; “Gardens in the Rain” by Debussy; “Sonatine, First Movement,” by Ravel, “Rhapsody, Op. 119” by Brahms; “Jeux d’Eau” by Ravel, and “Toccata in D minor, Op. 11” by Prokofiev.

NAMTA funds the scholarship through patron sponsorship, donations, and the Student Teacher Achievement Clinic. The Piano Technicians Guild and others have contributed money in honor of longtime area piano technicians Solveig Gregory and Frank Lundak.
