A CarFit safety program for older drivers will be part of this year’s Community Health and Wellness Fair at the Wartburg-Waverly Sports & Wellness Center.

CarFit will join a group of 50 vendors and a Farmers Market at the event, scheduled for Saturday morning, May 5. The outdoor Farmers Market will open at 8:30 a.m. at the north entrance of The W. The Health Fair, which includes a variety of free health screenings, free samples of health foods and informational booths, will run from 9 a.m. to noon in The W Hall of Champions.

CarFit  will run from 9 a.m. to noon in the Wartburg College Maintenance Building parking lot on the west side of 12th Street Northwest. The program, sponsored by AARP, the American Occupational Therapy Association and AAA, offers older adults an opportunity to see how well their car “fits” them.

Although older drivers are often the safest drivers, they are more likely to be killed or seriously injured when a crash occurs, due to the greater fragility of their bodies. Ensuring their cars are properly adjusted for them can greatly increase not only the drivers’ safety but also the safety of others. The check takes about 20 minutes.

The fair will also offer supervised activities for kids and the fair door prizes, including $100 gift certificates to several area businesses and two summer memberships to The W.

Now in its fifth year, the Community Health & Wellness Fair is sponsored by The W, Hy-Vee and Waverly Health Center. A complete list of vendors is available by clicking on the Health Fair icon at www.the-w.org/

The fair is part of a day of activities in Waverly that includes the Waverly Art Walk from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Kohlmann Park and Moms on Main, a pre-Mothers Day retail promotion in downtown Waverly.
