More than 50 vendors will offer free health screenings, a wide array of informational booths and a Farmers Market Saturday morning, May 5, at the Wartburg-Waverly Sports & Wellness Center.

The fifth annual Community Health and Wellness Fair — sponsored by The W, Hy-Vee and the Waverly Health Center — will open at 8:30 a.m. with a Farmers Market outside the north entrance of The W. The Health and Wellness Fair will start at 9 a.m. in The W Hall of Champions. It will run until noon.

“This is a great event for residents of all ages to learn more about area health services, healthy eating, dieting, exercise and recreation,” said Dawn Wiegmann, RN, director of wellness and health promotion at The W. “A drawing for door prizes will be an added incentive to visit the fair.”

Vendors from the Waverly Farmers Market will offer early-season produce, eggs, garden plants and crafts. The Health and Wellness Fair will feature free blood-pressure and cholesterol (fasting required) checks, spinal screening, hearing-aid checks, otoscope visualization of the inner ear, Body Mass Index tests and nerve system screenings.

Other free services include chair massage, gait analysis for proper athletic shoe fit, Dermaview consultation to identify sun-damaged skin, bra consultation to ensure proper fit and assistance with Medicare and Part D signup.

Older adults can take advantage of CarFit, a program that checks how well their personal vehicles fit them and provides tips for safe driving. CarFit will be in front of the Wartburg Maintenance Building on 12th Street Northwest. Drivers should follow the signs, beginning at the south entrance of the parking lot. The check takes about 20 minutes.

The fair also will offer supervised children’s activities. Preschoolers can make a Mother’s Day craft and receive free balloon animals in the Kids Zone in the W classroom adjacent to the Hall of Champions. A Kids Activity Course in Hoover Fieldhouse will offer competition and prizes for grades K-6.
