65 high school students attend Wartburg science symposium
February 1, 2012
The Cedar Valley Science Symposium at Wartburg College attracted 65 high school students from six states who took part in 11 workshops and vied for scholarships.
The one-day sessions Saturday, Jan. 14, were designed to give science- and math-oriented high school juniors and seniors an opportunity to pursue in-depth, specific areas in contemporary science, engineering, and computer science.
A Wartburg faculty member or a team of clinical laboratory scientists led each workshop. Among the topics were solving a murder, CSI-style; melding biology and psychology to study behavior in neuroscience; doing DNA fingerprint analyses; using microscopy to study cell structure; diagnosing illnesses; and gaining insights into electrical and hydraulic systems.
All high school seniors participating in the symposium were eligible for scholarships of $1,500 annually for four years as determined by Wartburg faculty members.
Wartburg is a four-year, selective liberal arts college of the Lutheran Church (ELCA), internationally recognized for community engagement. The college enrolls 1,805 students from 29 U.S. states and 49 countries.
