Steve Adams & Rebekah Gerth

Steve ’83 & Rebekah (Gerth) ’84 Adams
I met my wife through French Club and I was her tutor, as well. We started as friends. We fell in love. When she came to Paris for May Term , I came up from Montpellier, where I was studying my junior year abroad and proposed to her on bended knee at her boarding house. I got a top-flight education — and an awesome wife thanks to Wartburg College.

Allison & Aaron Bartholmey

Allison (Engel) ’10 & Aaron ’09 Bartholmey
We met through Faith Alive and had a great year of Euchies, dinners in the Mensa, and taking Nestle-scented walks. After we graduated, we went our separate ways — but seemed to keep following each other, finally ending up teaching at the same school. In 2019 we decided we liked each other better than cool cookies — and got married!

Krista Bergquist & Nathan Stumme

Krista Bergquist ’19 & Nathan Stumme ’19
We met sophomore year in organic chemistry class (we definitely have chemistry!) when we were sat next to each other in a seating arrangement (thanks Dr. Zart!). Over the next year we got to know each other as friends, then started dating our junior year. The rest is history, and we just got engaged!

Victoria Breshears & Joshua Moniz

Victoria Breshears ’10 & Joshua Moniz ’10
I was always eyeing him in the Mensa as he read newspapers during breakfast. We finally met through mutual friends at the end of our freshman year and have been the BEST of friends since! This past December he asked me to be his while we watched the waves roll in on a beach in Hawaii. We love sharing adventures together!

Trevor and Alexandra Carolan with baby Juliana

Alexandra (Ciota) ’13 & Trevor ’11 Carolan
As student body vice president in 2009, Trevor was in charge of leading orientation for the freshman senators who had just been elected, including Alexandra. They hit it off instantly and the rest is history! Alexandra and Trevor were engaged in the garden next to the Chapel in 2012, were married in 2014, and welcomed baby Juliana in 2020.

Dana (Grove) ’70 & Russ ’70 Creydt
It all started one afternoon in 1969 when we just happened to meet at the library. Russ asked me to go to a play at St. Paul’s Church on Valentine’s Day! We were married in April 1970, so it has been 50 years!

Katelyn & Elliot Engh

Katelyn (Hemingson) ’07 & Elliot ’07 Engh
Elliot and I took a German class together but we never spoke to each other. We had mutual friends that decided to set us up on a blind date the next semester. We went on a group date to the Waverly Bowl Inn. We dated for a year before we got engaged. We were married at Wartburg Chapel in September 2008 by Pastor Trachte! We had our reception in the Ballrooms at the Student Center. It’s always enjoyable to come back to campus and remember our on-campus dates and lovely wedding.

Kristina & Joel Gindo

Kristina (Goematt) ’12 & Joel ’13 Gindo
I saw Joel play guitar at International Student Showcase Night. Many other gals sounded impressed with whistles at the concert. We met later when a friend asked me to come to the IClub ’80s Night party at the Diers house. Joel and I hung out in the practice room playing music together. He would come to visit me in Founders and Lohe and we enjoyed summer in Waverly. My favorite memories are of eating in the Mensa together, playing music, and walking alongside the Cedar River. We have been married 6 years !

Angie & Matthew Hansen

Angie (Busche) ’97 & Matthew ’96 Hansen
Matt and I met in cross country and eventually we both were captains of our respective teams. Memories include: waking up students on Outfly by running the dorms, eating in the caf together, cool cookies, river road green bridge, “Let’s go to Joe’s,” parties at the Alamo, Luther run, and competing in many XC and track meets together. 23 years happily married with 5 beautiful children!

Kathryn & Bruce Jacobs

Kathryn (Shulz) ’84 & Bruce ’82 Jacobs
Bruce and I are a Wartburg couple all the way across. We met on the old Becker 2, back when it was the math/physics/comp sci floor. Our friendship started there. In 1982, a mutual friend propositioned him for me… without my knowledge. The proposition? That he should take me to the dance across campus that evening. By that fall, we were a couple. Our first kiss was in front of the old fountain in September. The Sunday after Thanksgiving, Bruce proposed to me in his dorm room. Pastor Trachte performed our marriage ceremony in the old Buhr lounge on April 14, 1984 – during spring break. Our wedding party was almost all Wartburg students and alums. A good third of our wedding guests were students who had stayed the weekend on campus to attend the wedding. We are a Wartburg couple and proud of it!

Jennifer & Michael Jones

Jennifer (Estling) ’01 and Michael ’04 Jones
My husband and I met on jazz tour. I was in Castle Singers and he was in the Knightliters Jazz Band. We ended up getting the tour fling award and have been together ever since!

Katie Kreis & Josh Voigt

Katie Kreis ’19 & Josh Voigt ’20
We met in the J-lab when Josh had to sit next to Katie when his “computer didn’t work.” She promptly ignored him until they hit it off at Joe’s a couple weeks later. Fast-forward 15 months of loving Katie … she finally agreed to date Josh and they’ve been together now for three years. They’ve even added a puppy to their family, whose name is Luther.

Linda (Mugridge) ’61 & Thomas ’61 Maik
Who knew in 1957 as a freshman that I would meet the love of my life as a junior in dance class? As Linda Mugridge Maik and I look forward to our 59th anniversary, our years together—earning Ph.Ds, teaching college together and raising two great children—may not have been exclusively filled with dancing, but with joy!

Julie and David Neve

Julie (Jackson) ’76 & David ’76 Neve
Dave and I got together our freshman year (1973) on the first European tour of the Wartburg College Band under the direction of Dr. Robert E. Lee. We won the “silver spoon” award for the couple who got together on tour! We married in August 1976 after graduating together. The black and white photo was taken on the plane ride home from Europe!

Judy & Bert Nuehring

Judy (Jebsen) ’85 & Bert ’85 Nuehring
Bert and I met sometime during freshman orientation in the fall of ’81 — we can’t remember where or when. Just remember being good friends and enjoying hanging out the first three years. Then by chance went to the Homecoming Dance in fall of ’84 as our first official date and we were married in December 1985! We are in a long line of Wartburg romances beginning with my parents, Richard & Joyce Jebsen, and followed by both our children who also have Wartburg love stories: Megan & Reed and Jon & Carly (see their stories below).

Carly & Jon Nuehring

Carly (Kuhtz) ’17 & Jon ’16 Nuehring
Jon and I met when he was an Orientation Leader and I was a first-year student. We quickly became friends. Jon’s mom (Judy Nuehring ’85) often reminded him there wasn’t a lot of time left to find a Wartburg sweetheart like the rest of the family had, so he asked me out just in time! Since then, we’ve adopted our dog, Madison, gotten married and moved to California. Wartburg is where it all started, and I’m thankful to be part of a Wartburg family!

Megan and Reed Pedersen

Megan (Nuehring) ’13 & Reed ’13 Pedersen
I told my friends when I went to college that I would never marry an Iowa boy. Little did I know I would meet that “Iowa Boy” in The W within the first month. Reed and I started dating our first year at Wartburg, got married after graduation and now live in the Quad Cities with our son, Zeke, and dog, Millie.

Kelly & Jared Pirkl

Kelly (Watkins) ’04 & Jared ’04 Pirkl
A pitcher on the baseball team and a pitcher on the softball team who fell in love the fall of their senior year when they were both student teaching. Now these two teachers live in Waverly, up the hill from the campus where it all began with their four sons Carter, Ben, Noah, and Will.

Stacey & Brad Reints

Stacey (Knoll) ’13 & Brad Reints
My professor, Jennifer (Pothast) Schilling, brought my husband and I together post-graduation. She knew us both and thought we would be great together. A little behind-the-scenes magic from her and here we are happily married with two beautiful babies! Our first child is named after her!

Morgan & Micah Russell

Morgan (Johnson) ’18 & Micah ’18 Russell
We first noticed each other at CWW and then ended up in a class together the next semester. We officially met each other in the library and had our first date at East Bremer Diner. We got married in Waverly this past October. Four months of marriage down and a lifetime to go!

Heather & Kevin Schmitz

Heather (Crow) ’95 & Kevin ’94 Schmitz
I met the woman of my dreams as a sophomore and she seemed annoying. As a junior, she was suddenly very interesting. Both still cheering on our college!

Megan & Stetson Shook

Megan (Bridgewater) ’17 & Stetson ’17 Shook
We met through mutual friends at Wartburg during our first year in 2013, but our love story began in winter of 2015 as we were partners for the co-ed dance team. Neither of us acted on those feelings then; however, we both admit that’s when it all started. We started dating in the fall of 2015 and became best friends. In July 2018, Stetson proposed in the dance studio in Waverly where I previously taught. With our relationship having a strong tie to dance, it was the perfect place to start our next chapter. We were married in September 2019 and I am so grateful to have found my dance partner for life.

Lydia & Clay Cook

Lydia Smith ’18 & Clay ’15 Cook
Clay and I met one wonderful Saturday night in the spring semester of his senior year and my freshman year. 6 years, 2 dogs, and a wedding later, we are still grateful for Wartburg College and Joe’s Knight Hawk.

Nancy (Schroeder) ’75 & Burton ’73 Svenden
We met in the chorus of the May Term musical “My Fair Lady.” We were partners in the Ascot Gavotte.

Bethany & Joe Tangen

Bethany (Wickre) ’02 & Joe ’02 Tangen
Joe: I met my future wife in a class that I didn’t need to take for my degree. My advisor was on Maternity leave and I had to find another music staff member to help me build my next semester of classes. This professor who will remain nameless pulled out the manual that was outdated and informed me that I needed a foreign language. I went on to take Intermediate German, met my future wife. The next semester, my advisor asked why I took Intermediate German. Foreign language was no longer a requirement.
Bethany: In Frau’s German class we had so much fun! I never guessed, you’d be “the one”! I’m so glad to have gained a best buddy. Whether hanging out, having fun, or needing to study!

Haley & Zach Vanness

Haley (Melz) ’18 & Zach ’19 Vanness
I met my husband during the Homecoming Renaissance Faire after our moms met during the special president’s breakfast. Our families ran into each other at Renn Faire, and spoke again at Octoberfest (complete with my dad wearing lederhosen), and the rest is history! Truly love at first sight, and one of the best gifts Wartburg gave me! We got married this past year, exactly five years (to the date!) after we met.

Dana Weckesser & Scott Guthrie

Dana Weckesser ’79 & Scott ’78 Guthrie
Through a mutual friend, Scott and I met at the Vogel Library at one of the study desks on the second floor in the fall of 1975. Since we had mutual interests (foreign languages, our faith, both were foreign exchange students in Europe, etc.), we became good friends. Later in the year we realized we meant more to each other than just friends. By the end of the 1970s we were married. We have a wonderful daughter who is a lawyer in Maryland.

Karen Low & Azmil Zabidi

Karen Low ’89 & Azmil Zeb Zabidi ’86
We lived barely five miles from each other in Malaysia but met half a world away, at Wartburg College. We were married in 1988.

John and Mary Adix

John ’58 & Mary (Holo) Adix
I met Mary Holo in the fall of 1954, our freshman year at Wartburg College. It was love at first sight. (Green Beanies and all!) We had many chapel dates. She was there for two years and then transferred to the University of Wisconsin. We managed a long-distance romance. I graduated from Wartburg in 1958. We were married in August 1958. I graduated from Wartburg Seminary in Dubuque, Iowa, in 1962. We have lived in a number of states and two foreign countries. It has been an exciting adventure. We will celebrate our 63rd anniversary this year. The love that began at Wartburg College continued to grow. We never argue. Hahaha! Our life has been richly blessed. We have four sons and seven grandchildren.

Caleb & Ashley Appleton

Caleb ’20 & Ashley (Stevens) ’19 Appleton
Ashley and I met at Cross Country camp my freshman year up in Minnesota. After a midnight canoeing adventure, it wasn’t long until we started dating. Continuing to grow closer over her next three years at school, I waited until the last week of her time at Wartburg to finally pop the question. Through a series of elaborate scavenger hunts, she found me down on one knee at the old wooden bridge by Nestle. She said yes, and we are now happily married and enjoying our new lives together. We will always be grateful for the memories and the people that our time at Wartburg has brought to both of us.

Steph and Jay Boeding

Steph (Robbins) ’99 & Jay ’99 Boeding
In our senior year, Jay would swing by the Journalism Lab early on Monday mornings on his way to the KWAR studio and find me very tired after staying up most of the night as editor of The Trumpet. He would take me to Kwik Star for coffee (no Konditorei in those days), and we got to know each other and enjoyed spending time together, and we soon started dating. We graduated, got married in 2000, and life took us to Cedar Rapids and Des Moines before we moved back to Waverly in 2014 to work at Wartburg. Now, we go to coffee together most days to the KDit on campus, and just celebrated our 20th anniversary this year. It’s very special for us to be at the same place we fell in love!

Sarah & Justin Brincks

Sarah (Learn) ’05 & Justin ’06 Brincks
Although Justin and I met before college, our love story began on Outfly 2002. I ran into him outside the bookstore, getting our $5 Outfly shirts. Of course, I was wearing underwear on my head at the time (because, Outfly!). The fact that he wasn’t deterred by the undies should have been my first inkling this could be something special. He learned that I was minoring in Spanish and asked if I could help him through his Spanish 106 course. Those meetings turned into hours-long conversations and the building of a wonderful friendship. The following summer, we went on our first date and have been inseparable since. He asked me to marry him under a weeping willow at Kohlmann Park just before graduation in May 2005. 17 years together, 14 years of marriage, 2 kids, and 1 dog later, Wartburg continues to hold a special place in our hearts.

Molly & Braxton Chiccelly

Molly (Schares) ’16 & Braxton ’16 Chiccelly
My freshman year, Kiera Benge and I would leave our door open in Vollmer; group of wrestlers walk by from Centennial; Braxton sees me and the rest is history. Married and baby on the way, 9 years later!

Amy Crow Sunleaf & Art Sunleaf

Amy Crow Sunleaf ’90 & Art Sunleaf ’89
For me it was my freshman year in Philosophy 101 in the Buckmaster Room. I remember being struck by Art’s quirky sense of humor on the first day of class when he randomly presented Dr. Alexander with a can of Spam. I thought to myself, “I gotta get to know this guy, he seems fun.”

Helen (Sutter) ’66 & Dale ’65 Fridley
I met Helen when I started going out with her roommate. Soon I was arranging double dates so that Helen and I would be on the same date—different partners. We developed a magic that is still strong 55 years later.

Megan & Michael Gleason

Megan (Ryan) ’07 & Michael Gleason
I returned to Wartburg to work in Admissions after a year away; Michael was working in Pathways at the time. During a SOAR event I was in charge of keeping parents and students out of the faculty area and almost tried to remove Michael from the room since I didn’t recognize him from my time at Wartburg as a student. We later met through mutual friends and spent 5 years at Wartburg before we left and have since returned (Michael is the director of Wartburg’s Institute for Leadership Education).

Janet & George Hanusa

Janet (Westphal) ’55 & George ’54 Hanusa
Janet, from Cedar Falls, Iowa, and I, from Reedsburg, Wisconsin, met in the Den, the cafe/soda fountain located in the basement of Wartburg Hall. I was a soda jerk and she was a dishwasher. Our 65th wedding anniversary will be Aug. 4, 2021!

Kyle Huegel & Erika Randall

Kyle Huegel ’09 & Erika Randall

Laura & Kyle Jaeger

Laura (Mackey) ’12 & Kyle ’12 Jaeger
We met at orientation in 2008, but in February 2011, he said we should get coffee sometime. That turned into regular breakfast dates at the K-Dit and walking me home to the Manors when he lived in Löhe. Countless phone calls kept us connected during his semester at Wartburg West, summers working at different camps, and years of living in different states. After all this time, we tied the knot in the Wartburg Chapel in August 2020.

Paulette & Dan Kilts

Paulette (Pinnow) ’74 & Dan ’72 Kilts
Dan was my transportation to Wartburg and fellow church member at home. We were engaged in his Beetle outside of Fred’s SuperValu at the edge of campus fall of 1972. Look happy then and still are.

Jennifer (Lohmann) ’92 & Brian ’92 King
One day in Western Civilization class, a friend/classmate was asking if I had anybody I was interested in dating. A game of 20 questions ensued and a certain person (Brian King) was eavesdropping and felt certain that he was the six-foot-tall, blond-haired, blue-eyed football player I was describing. He was not. However, it helped him muster the courage to ask me out and the rest, as they say, is history.

Le Ora Lee (Olson) ’58 & Roger Lageshulte ’60
We met as freshmen in 1956 in a class called Building Your Marriage. We were married in June 1958, by the Rev. Wm. Weiblen in St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Waverly. On June 7, 2021, we will celebrate our 63rd anniversary.

Meredith & Wendell Liemohn

Meredith (Stuhmer) ’60 & Wendell ’56 Liemohn
Dr. Edwin Liemohn was the head of the music department, my major advisor, and director of the Wartburg Choir, of which I was fortunate to be a member. I loved him and his wife, Clara. I heard a lot about their son, Wendell, who was off in the U. S. Navy. My senior year he came back to Wartburg as a football coach. One day we met walking across campus and I said “Hi, Wendy!” and he paid attention. We celebrated our 60th wedding anniversary January 29.

Shayla & Chris McIntyre

Shayla (Hopp) ’14 & Chris ’14 McIntyre
Our moms knew each other for years but Chris and I had never met (lived 15 minutes apart our whole lives). They were both worried their kids would go off to college and not have any friends and insisted we meet. We had our IS 101 class together and then sat together in band. After 6 months of asking, I finally agreed to go out with Chris, and we’ve been together since!

Stephanie & Matt McNamara

Stephanie (Mangels) ’02 & Matt ’02 McNamara
It started between two friends who met in the Complex and culminated surrounded by family and friends in the Wartburg Chapel when Pastor Trachte married us 17.5 years ago! Student Senate, Co-Ed Dance Team Routines, Cutest Couple Award at Choir Formal, Sesquicentennial Celebration, European Tour, Young Alumni Award… our Wartburg love story is full of amazing memories!

Rachel & Jack Mithelman

Rachel (Thorson) ’77 & Jack ’77 Mithelman
We met very early in our freshman year music classes, started dating mid-way through our junior year, and were married during the summer following graduation. Along with making music together, we have also shared careers as ELCA pastors.

Joshua & Tony PeterSmith

Joshua & Tony PeterSmith
Tony was a graduate student intern, working in Admissions, when he found my “new graphic designer hire” update in The Juice. Curious and looking for new friends in the Cedar Valley, he looked me up on Facebook—and what he discovered triggered his Gaydar. Feigning a reason to meet, he visited the Marketing & Communication office with a flash drive, looking for the college logo for “a presentation.” A few probing Lync messages back and forth later, we swapped anticipation for the new Taylor Swift album—and eventually—phone numbers.

Annita & Richard Rettig

Annita (Watson) ’77 & Richard ’77 Rettig
May Term 1975, we both signed up for a marine biology course at the Gulf Coast Research Lab in Ocean Springs, MS, with Dr. Stephen Main. There were about a dozen students in our group and we stayed in dorms on the lab grounds. We had to do our own cooking, so we drew names for cooking partners. It was the “luck of the draw” that paired us up; and the rest, as they say, is history! We were engaged eight months later and will celebrate our 44th wedding anniversary in May.

Heidi & Clint Riese

Heidi (Gaulke) ’08 & Clint ’05 Riese
Our parents would like to think we met in Biology 101 (where we first noticed each other), but we reallllly met at Joe’s (and it worked out!). We can’t believe that was 16 years ago now. Clint was a senior and Heidi was a freshman, and he moved to Waverly after graduation so he essentially got to experience Wartburg for another three years. We fondly — and often — reflect on those first encounters like Clint tracking Heidi down while she worked at the Mensa, parties at the International House, watching the early days of reality TV from a futon in Vollmer, and squeezing in quick lunch dates while Clint was on break from his work at the newspaper. We were both rare Wisconsinites who happened to find our way to a small school and cute town in Iowa — and into each other’s lives, for good!

Amy & Andrew Salvaterra

Amy (DeJardin) ’07 & Andrew ’07 Salvaterra
First semester freshman year, we had four classes together, but it took until second semester when we were paired up as partners in our Broadcast Production class for us to finally get to know each other and start dating. 17 years later I am still incredibly thankful that Professor McMillan did what I was too nervous to do!

Nancy (Pinter) ’73 & William ’73 Schuldt
We met in our first year biology class. Seating was alphabetical. There were no last names between P and S so we were lab partners. We married in ’72. We’ll celebrate 49 years in May. Thanks, Wartburg!

Ashley DeLong & Luke Shaffer

Ashley DeLong ’23 & Luke Shaffer ’23
I met this beautiful girl at our mutual friend’s birthday party, and weirdly enough we didn’t even start talking until the COVID pandemic. The entire time we were at home we talked over the phone daily, and made plans about what we would do when we go back to campus. I don’t think a day goes by where we aren’t together, and I’m so thankful Wartburg allows us to be in-person for that exact reason. Ashley is the one reason I am grateful for the situation we’re in with this pandemic, and I’m so ready to go back to a normal world with the love of my life.

Erin & Stuart Spencer

Erin (Grandgenett) ’07 & Stuart ’08 Spencer
After marketing himself in our daily walks after 7:45 a.m. Principles of Marketing class, I finally said yes to a first date fall of our junior year. Senior year took us both to Wartburg West, where our love grew through our explorations of Denver. We married in 2009 and welcomed triplet “Knights in training” in 2013. Our love story built its foundation at Wartburg!

Becky and Nathan Tomlinson

Becky (Hertenstein) ’94 & Nathan ’94 Tomlinson
Met first day of fall term freshman year in 1990… together ever since.

Mallory & Daniel Volkmann

Mallory (Swigart) ’19 & Daniel ’20 Volkmann
I was performing in Kastle Kapers and he was the friendly Neumann worker who set up my mic! Singing in Castle Singers together for two years is where we grew closer and he became my best friend. Due to Covid, we weren’t able to be married in the Wartburg Chapel as we originally hoped for, but we were still able to have our first look photos taken right outside of it.

Tyler and Kelsey Winkey

Kelsey (Scherven) ’13 & Tyler ’12 Winkey
Kelsey and Tyler met in LS 115, Exploring Elements of Leadership with Dr. Bill Withers. Apparently leadership wasn’t all they were there to explore! As they sat across the aisle from each other, their note passing turned into conversations, then a group project, and eventually a date after the semester ended. The rest is history!

Bonnie & John Zittergruen

Bonnie (Stubbe) ’73 & John ’73 Zittergruen
Bonnie and I met our freshman year in Dr. Hertel’s biology class. We got married two years later and lived in the married student trailer court. Celebrating 50 years this summer.

Beckie & Dale Ziemer

Beckie (Myer) ’74 & Dale ’73 Ziemer
We met — Beckie freshman, Dale sophomore — with the winter dance in December 1970 as our first big date. We celebrated the 50th anniversary of that event in 2020!

Ken ’67 & Dorothy (Petersen) ’70 Baker
Met this cool North Hall guy in the spring of 1967. Married in 1970. Many adventures in many directions. Now 50 years later, retirement and great memories. Thank you, Wartburg.

Sofia Bouffard & Stephen Klaassen

Sofia Bouffard ’20 & Stephen Klaassen ’18
We first met through the Wind Ensemble at Wartburg College in the Fall of 2016 and our shared love of music. From study dates to stargazing to late-night Insomnia Cookies and Pancheros runs, we began to realize that the world was a better place when we were together. A special time for us was serving the Wartburg College Wind Ensemble together on the Band Council over the 2018 Tour to Arizona and singing together with our Wind Ensemble family in the Red Rock Amphitheater in Colorado. When Sofia joined Stephen in Tulsa in June 2020, we were so excited to close the long-distance chapter in our lives and continue the journey to marriage in June 2021! Stephen is currently in his second year of medical school at the OU-TU School of Community Medicine, and Sofia is a Board-Certified Music Therapist in the Tulsa area.

Kathryn Buck-Strong & Greg Strong

Kathryn Buck-Strong ’90 & Greg Strong ’89
I was student teaching in Denver with Wartburg West the fall of 1989, and Greg came out to find a job and ski with one of my roommates, and slept on our couch — I was a little miffed that she had invited him to do that when we didn’t even really know him. Within the week he was there we had our first date on Nov. 3, 1989, and were married on Nov. 3, 1990. Our daughter attends Wartburg now!

Drew & Abbey Crawford

Abbey (Hempen) ’11 & Drew ’13 Crawford
We both played basketball at Wartburg and met early Drew’s freshman year. Became best friends and didn’t start dating until after Abbey graduated and was working in Cedar Falls, while Drew was still at Wartburg. Our relationship really grew from the opportunities and experiences that Wartburg provides.

Carrie & Matthew Duffee

Carrie (Walsh) ’93 & Matthew ’92 Duffee
Joe’s Knighthawk, fall of ’89, is the place we first connected..
Became best friends until Valentine’s Day 1990, when love bloomed quite unexpected..
31 years later and still together,
Happily married, now 25 years.
Thank you to Wartburg and all our old friends; to you, we raise a glass and say CHEERS!!

Ruth & William Gibson

Ruth (Neugebauer) ’76 & William ’76 Gibson
We meet via a random phone call placed to my floor. (No individual room phones or cell phones). We had our first date to Roy’s Place for an egg cheese and got engaged at Conservation Park 3 years later. We’ve been married for 44 years!

Kara and Chad Hageman

Kara (Ertzinger) ’96 & Chad ’96 Hageman
Chad and I took physics together and we lived across the hall from each other in the Residence. We studied together and became great friends (I think we laughed more than we studied). Eventually, I asked him out on our first date (although hesitant about losing our friendship if dating did not work out). After our first 14-hour date in Iowa City, we went on our second date in Cancun, Mexico and we’ve been together ever since. Chad proposed in the Chapel in 1996 just before Kastle Kapers and in July of 1997, we were married in the Chapel. We had the first Catholic wedding in the Chapel with both Pastor Trachte and Father Kuhn officiating. It was an amazing and very meaningful ceremony, especially after spending most Wednesday evenings there for the worship service. One of our fondest memories is singing the Wartburg Loyalty Song with our friends at our wedding reception. We are so thankful that we had the opportunity to share our faith with our family and friends at our Wartburg wedding.

Nancy & Mike Heiter

Nancy (Kruschke) ’80 & Mike ’79 Heiter
I met the love of my life when I was student athlete trainer & Mike was the equipment manager for the football team. We still today share a love of athletes.

Jamie Harrings & Colin Jacobs

Jamie Harrings ’16 & Colin Jacobs ’19
Colin and I met in symphonic band rehearsal one day. We started talking more frequently and eventually I gave Colin my phone number. Turns out, I had given him the wrong number on accident (seriously, no joke!). Thankfully fellow Wartburg alum Angela Zook ’16 saved the day and got Colin the correct number. We are now happily engaged to be married!

Elaine (Melchert) ’63 & Harry ’65 Jebsen
I lived upstairs of the Pub House and had mopped the floors, running a big splinter into my finger. I went downstairs and asked Elaine, editor of The Trumpet, to help remove it. She said that it probably should be pulled all the way through the finger. I said no way, but stayed to talk and we have been talking for 60 years. What a wonderful and joy-filled marriage. Thanks to the Pub House!

Bailey and Alex Jenson (Photo by Katie Lindgren Photography)

Bailey (Wilson) ’15 & Alex ’15 Jenson
I met my husband, Alex, on the first day of IS-101 in 2011. The rest is history! We dated all throughout our time at Wartburg, and got married in 2017. Wartburg will always be such a special place to us!

Kristin & Andrew Kahler

Kristin (MacDonald) ’10 & Andrew ’10 Kahler
We met at Camp Ingawanis during an early orientation before classes started in 2006. And we’ve been together ever since!

Dalissa & Thor Larson
I met my husband at Meistersinger in Neumann Auditorium during a break in 1983. Started dating a year later, and married in 1987. After living in three states and with three kids in tow, we moved to Waverly. I’ve been working at Wartburg for 20 years, where it all started!

Michaela & Brenna Long

Brenna (Nordeng) ’16 & Michaela ’16 Long
Brenna and I met our freshman year living across from each other in Vollmer Hall. We we’re both science majors so we got to know each other over multiple shared classes, and what started as friendship quickly turned into 8 years of dating. We married Sept. 26, 2020, and in true Wartburg fashion, ended our wedding dance night dancing to “Sweet Caroline.”

Rebecca Miller & Caleb Bushbaum

Rebecca Miller ’20 & Caleb Bushbaum ’20
We met freshman year and the rest is history. Fast-forward past Mensa dates, sport outings, drinks at Joe’s, late-night study sessions and graduation: Wartburg provided best friends the chance to fall in love.

Emily & Chase Moser

Emily (Eimers) ’12 & Chase ’15 Moser
Oregon Cross Country Camp date night 2011 was where it all began for me (but Chase has a different story). It’s the one night at camp where we aren’t a sweaty mess. We all get dressed up and line up outside the charter bus. Senior girls always pick freshmen guys first and Coach J buys ice cream for everyone. The Great Audrey Weidman convinced me to choose the gorgeous new Moser boy on the team. I played along, not looking for a new relationship, but he stole my heart from day one and I wouldn’t change a thing. I can’t imagine not doing life without my best friend. <3

Amy & Jason Nagel

Amy (Pack) ’94 & Jason ’95 Nagel
A simple love story… met in PE class at Wartburg, Jason asked me on a date at Joe’s Knight Hawk, engaged 5 months later, married June 4, 1994, and here we are almost 27 years later living in Colorado, parents to two sons, 21 and 17. Had the awesome experience of visiting Wartburg Castle in Eisenach, Germany, in December 2019 as part of our 25-year anniversary celebration!

Kate & Neal Poppe

Kate (Driscoll) ’01 & Neal Poppe
My husband wasn’t a Wartburg student, but his best friend from high school (Haley Plautz Owen 2001) was. She and I were very close and for a few years Neal would come visit her at college on some weekends and we would all hang out. After a few years of being acquaintances he asked me out on a date and the rest is history. We started dating in 1999 and Pastor Trachte married us at Wartburg Chapel in 2006.

Libby & Duff Ridgeway

Libby (Schoening) ’93 & Duff ’92 Ridgeway
Duff and I met in January 1990. I was a freshman and he was a sophomore. He walked into my dorm to say hello to a fellow student, and I instantly knew he would be a part of my future. On our first Valentine’s Day, he hung a banner outside of the caf. It was hung up at our wedding 4 1/2 years later. We have two kids and will be celebrating 27 years of marriage this June.

Megan and Adam Ries

Megan (Baber) ’09 & Adam ’09 Ries
Adam and I were acquaintances through our biology major, but I became attracted to his incredible singing voice during his solo at Christmas with Wartburg 2007. Our love blossomed as we continued to cross paths in the FAC for our respective rehearsals (Wind Ensemble & Castle Singers). The rest is history — we were married in 2012 and own a chiropractic practice together in West Des Moines, Iowa.

Sandra & David RIley

Sandra (Roecker) ’73 & David ’73 Riley
While we met the first time at Regents Scholarship competition, by our junior year this guy kept sitting next to me in Dr. Waltmann’s Calc IV. Dave asked me to Homecoming only to confess that he would spend the day taking pictures on the sidelines. I could come later to the darkroom (as Dave would say) to see what develops and then ride along to turn the photos in to the Waterloo paper. What really developed was our life together and two future Wartburg alums: Kasandra 2002 and Derek 2004. They were also students of Dr. Waltmann! June 1, 1973: a great date for a wedding.

Jack and Sarah Salzwedel

Sarah (Slife) ’82 & Jack ’82 Salzwedel
Sarah and I met at Wartburg and got married a year after graduation. Our wedding party was mostly Knight friends, the reception was a true ëcollege’ party! We have 4 kids (two graduated from Wartburg)…and have continue to hang out with close college friends. We stay connected to the college and try to support Wartburg however we can. We feel very lucky to have Wartburg in our lives.

JoAnne & James Schwarz

JoAnne (Stevens) ’64 & James ’62 Schwarz
Met JoAnne at a dance in the Little Theater, typical Wartburg courtship, Den for brownies and goop, chapel, cafeteria dress-up night. Now married for 57-plus years, three children, all Wartburg grads. Go Knights!

Daria & Cody Simpson

Daria (Zawierucha) ’14 & Cody ’12 Simpson
We met in Clinton Hall laundry room March 2011. Cody asked me if he put in laundry detergent as he was screwing the lid back on! It worked because we started dating a couple months later during May Term 2011. We got married in the Wartburg Chapel on Sept. 12, 2015. Our love and marriage all started on campus.

Lisa & David Staude

Lisa (Wesbrook) ’84 & David ’82 Staude
We first met going to a ground north party. He was writing a letter with a friend to her brother who graduated from Wartburg. She asked a group of us to pick her up before the party. Later that month after a football game he joined a group of friends with a trip down the water slide. A couple of weeks later was Outfly. I went over with girls from my floor who were in classes with him. We were in the cafeteria and he asked who wanted to dance. After that we walked down to the river and from then on we were a couple. Married 19 years before a car accident took his life in 2006. 2 wonderful children and a grandbaby on the way all thanks to Wartburg and Outfly!

Ruth (Pfol) ’55 & Jim ’55 Unmacht
I was in the lounge of the dorm, and Jim and Bill Bomhoff were there. They asked me which one I would like to go out with. I randomly said, “Jim,” and it became a permanent relationship. We wed in 1955. He passed away in 1997.

Julie & Chris Watson

Julie (Jermier) ’05 & Chris ’04 Watson
I met Chris in a science class my freshman year. I was crazy intimidated that an older football player wanted to be my lab partner! A year later, we would reconnect at a party… fell in love and became best friends! 19 years later and 3 sons… we are stronger than ever and still cherish our Wartburg memories together!

Kristin (Huinker) ’11 & Nick Young
We met in our first class at Wartburg (LS101). Nick transferred after his second year, and our paths didn’t cross again for 6 or 7 years, until we both attended the Gentlemen of the Road tour Wartburg hosted in 2015. Long story short, our happily-ever-after began when we got married in August 2020!

Rylee Zobac & Henry Hahn

Rylee Zobac ’23 & Henry Hahn ’23
My boyfriend Henry and I have been together for 6 years, since eighth grade. When it came to our senior year of high school, we knew we wanted to go to the same college. I hadn’t heard much about Wartburg, but Henry had already fallen in love with this school. I did a campus visit and fell in love with it, too. We enrolled together and both got accepted. We’re now sophmores here at Wartburg and we are strong as ever! We love it here!
