Wartburg gave me specialized learning, liberal arts courses

NAME: Jessica Faber
CLASS YEAR: 2021
HOMETOWN: Clear Lake, Iowa
MAJOR: Engineering science

INVOVLEMENT ON CAMPUS: Women’s soccer team, Dance Marathon, and Innovation Studio

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE WARTBURG: I chose Wartburg because it felt a lot more personal than a lot of other universities. It just felt like the people here were really welcoming and invested in giving me a good education.

HOW DID YOU DECIDE ON YOUR MAJOR: I came in undecided about my major,  but I knew I wanted to do something in science. Dr. Daniel Black was the professor for my Inquiry Studies course, and I was taking a physics class the first semester that I really enjoyed. I felt like engineering was kind of like applied sciences, and the problem-solving aspect of it really drew me to it.

WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS AFTER GRADUATION: I will be pursuing a master’s degree in biomedical engineering at the University of Iowa.

HOW HAS WARTBURG SET YOU UP FOR SUCCESS IN YOUR FIELD: Overall, I feel like Wartburg has shaped me to be a better student, and I do enjoy that we take the time to learn about things outside of our major. Many sciences can feel very narrow, and I feel like sometimes those other programs miss out on what is going on in the world. I appreciate that Wartburg has given me both that specialized learning and liberal arts courses.

WHAT DID YOU DO FOR YOUR SENIOR DESIGN PROJECT: We partnered with Retrieving Freedom to create a sway bridge so that the puppies can build their confidence no matter what situation they’re in. When they’re with their person, no matter what situation, they can provide the help needed. The bridge is made so that the puppies can walk on it and be exposed to different textures that would help build their confidence.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE WARTBURG MEMORY: I can’t give a specific moment but being involved with the soccer team. Being part of the team atmosphere and getting to be part of a family where everyone wants you to succeed was such a great experience.

WHY IS WARTBURG WORTH IT:  How people really do want you to succeed and take what you have learned in the classroom and apply it to what your true passions are and what you want to do after graduation.
