Thomas Hooten, principal trumpet in the Los Angeles Philharmonic, will perform and teach at the Wartburg Trumpet Festival March 10-11.

Hooten will join Wartburg’s Scott Muntefering, professor and director of the Symphonic Band and Trumpet Choir, as a guest performer and clinician at the sixth annual festival, which brings together 36 area high school musicians for workshops and concerts.

The festival includes two public concerts. A recital Thursday, March 10, will include performances from Hooten; Muntefering; Suzanne Torkelson, pianist and Wartburg professor of music; Jim Vaux, trumpeter and Wartburg lecturer; and the Wartburg Trumpet Choir.

A finale concert will feature Hooten, the Wartbug Trumpet Choir and the festival high school trumpet choir Friday, March 11.

Both free events begin at 7 p.m. in the Wartburg Chapel.

Hooten has also served as principal trumpet in the Atlanta Symphony, where he was awarded the first Mabel Dorn Reeder Honorary Chair for excellence in musical artistry, leadership, collegiality and community engagement. He also has appeared as a soloist with the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, the United States Air Force Band, Keystone Winds and the Richmond Symphony Orchestra.

The University of South Florida and Rice University graduate released his first solo album in 2011.

Muntefering, the festival’s founder, is the Eugene and Ruth Weidler Drape Distinguished Professor in Music Education at Wartburg.
