Opera Workshop will perform Mozart’s ‘Cosi fan tutte’
February 8, 2016
The opera, directed and conducted by Brian Pfaltzgraff, associate professor of music, will be presented in its English translation in McCaskey Lyceum at 7:30 p.m. on both nights. Admission is a suggested $5 donation.
The story revolves around two young couples who learn an important lesson about human nature in the 18th century.
“Opera buffa (opera in comic tradition) relies on recitativo, a stylized, melodic form of dialogue, to propel the plot. Arias and ensembles punctuate the musical dialogue, providing the performers opportunities to display their virtuosic singing,” Pfaltzgraff said. “The first and second act finales are some of the most exciting vocal music that Mozart wrote for the stage.”
The cast includes Wartburg students and Greg DiMarco, a 2015 graduate.
“Our cast has been challenged by the experience and is performing difficult music at a high level,” Pfaltzgraff said.
Staging for the production was completed by William Earl, associate professor of theater. This will be Earl’s final Opera Workshop with the college as he is retiring at the end of the school year.
A string quartet, funded through a grant from the Virginia Burns Private Foundation, will accompany the production.
