Popular violinist Jessica Lee will be the guest artist for the Wartburg Community Symphony’s season finale, “From Russia With Love,” Friday, April l3, at Wartburg College.
The symphony, under the director of Dr. Daniel Kaplunas, will feature music by three noted Russian composers —Tchaikovsky, Rimsky-Korsakov and Borodin — during the concert at 7:30 p.m., in Neumann Auditorium.
Lee, a Virginia native who was featured in Life magazine when she began playing the violin at age 3, will perform “Violin Concerto in D major” by Tchaikovsky. She received a master’s degree from Juilliard School and won the Concert Artists Guild International Competition. She currently lives in New York City
The program also will feature:
- “Russian Easter Overture” by Rimsky-Korsakov, which moves from solemn and mysterious to an unbridled celebration of Easter.
- “In the Steppes of Central Asia” by Borodin, which celebrates the serene beauty of the central Asian landscape.
- “Slavonic March”, written by Tchaikovsky for a Red Cross Society concert benefiting wounded Serbian veterans.
“This last concert of the symphony’s season is by far the most exciting,” Kaplunas said. “We will finish the season on a high note.”
Tickets are $15 for an adult and $5 for a student. Wartburg students are admitted free with their college ID.
The concert also begins the symphony’s membership campaign for its 60th anniversary season in 2012-13. Memberships begin at $40 for an individual and $75 for a family, increase to the Gold Baton Level of $1,000, and include the opportunity to sponsor a concert or the season.
As a bonus, 2012-13 symphony members will receive a complimentary family pass to an all-Beethoven concert in Neumann Auditorium on May 12 by the Wartburg Community Symphony and the Metropolitan Chorale.
