Four Wartburg College students received excellence awards at the Art Directors Association of Iowa’s 67th annual Design Exhibition in Des Moines at the beginning of April.
Anya Poggenklass and Michael Elshahat received an Award of Excellence for Integrated Branded Systems. Annette Baker received an Award of Excellence for Photography. Milagros Toribio received an Award of Excellence for Announcements & Invitations for the 2025 Senior Exhibit Invitation; her design also earned a Best of Category recognition, which is only given to published works.
“This is my first experience entering my work into a competition, and I was so pleased to be featured. The conference was an excellent experience for me. Although it was exciting to see my own work featured, I greatly enjoyed seeing the other entries. I learned so much from observing the work of others,” said Baker, a senior journalism and communication major. “As I have only been doing serious photography work for around a year, it feels so validating to have my work featured in this ADAI exhibition. I feel inspired to continue to work creatively and build my portfolio. Photography is something I have been interested in since I was a little girl, and seeing this dream come to life is so rewarding.”
The students were encouraged and assisted with submissions by Marwa Elkashif, assistant professor of art.
“I was very thrilled to be included in this year’s ADAI Annual Exhibition. I was very hesitant initially to submit my work, but Professor Marwa was the catalyst for promoting a sense of pride in my work. To my surprise, I got accepted, and I was so excited to be a part of such an amazing group of exhibitions,” said Poggenklass, a junior graphic design major. “Being recognized in the artistic community for my work was an honor and a pleasure. I thoroughly enjoyed seeing everyone else’s work and passion projects while observing and appreciating how creative minds come together to create art and aesthetics that shape the world around us. I can’t wait to participate next year and continue my learning journey.”
