Wartburg College’s Scott Muntefering and Lia Snead will present their research on two Iowa musicians and mentoring in music education as a part of a faculty lecture series commemorating 10 years of the Eugene and Ruth Weidler Drape Distinguished Professorship in Music Education.
The lecture will begin at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 5, in Orchestra Hall in the Bachman Fine Arts Center on campus. The lecture is free and open to the public.
“The professorship has provided me with the opportunity to continue my research on the history of music education and bands in the Midwest,” said Muntefering, who holds the Eugene and Ruth Weidler Drape Distinguished Professorship in Music Education. “I’ve been able to travel for research and present this research at numerous conferences, festivals and other colleges and universities over the past 10 years.”
Muntefering will present “Two Midwest Cornet Soloists and Bandleaders: Ernest Pechin (1891-1946) and T. Fred Henry (1877-1924),” which explores the careers of two Iowa cornet soloists. Snead will present “Get a Mentor,” which focuses on the importance of mentorship and networking for music students.

“In addition to sharing my historical research, I hope this series highlights the research other music faculty have done in the department. Often, we are seen as performers or conductors, and we hope students and the community can see that we are active researchers as well,” said Muntefering. “Personally, I hope to share some lost stories about musical events and organizations in the Midwest, particularly in Iowa.”
Future lectures are planned for February and April 2025.
