Bouska named a choral advocate by the Iowa Choral Directors Association
September 3, 2025
The award recognizes individuals who have supported the advancement of choral music in churches, schools and communities. Bouska was nominated by Jeff Knutson, the director of vocal music at Waukee High School, and was one of only five individuals recognized this year.
“Sarah’s work in her role at Wartburg has been nothing short of incredible. She is bringing in national names in choral music yearly for Meistersinger Honor Choir and coordinating one of, if not the most, comprehensive all-state choir learning camps in the state,” Knutson said, adding that she also provides professional development for teachers at those events.
Bouska also helps coordinate special events throughout the school year that bring high school ensembles to the Wartburg campus for shared concerts or clinics, and she plans stops at high schools while the college’s ensembles are on tour.
Through the Wartburg Department of Music, Bouska is dedicated to highlighting and enriching every aspect of the Wartburg experience, from welcoming new students to celebrating alumni.
“Sarah has made choral music as a whole better with the work she’s done. Her willingness to dream big and extend opportunities to musicians at all levels makes her particularly deserving of this honor,” Knutson said.
Outside of her work at Wartburg, Bouska is an adjudicator, collaborative pianist and clinician. She also serves on the ICDA board for Scholarship Students & Student Activities and is an active member of the American Choral Directors Association, Iowa Music Educators Association and Iowa Bandmasters Association. She is the contemporary worship director at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Waverly.
“I’m deeply honored to receive this award from the state and grateful to be nominated by Jeff Knutson, an incredible educator and friend,” Bouska said. “Supporting our state through music and fostering opportunities for growth and connection have always been passions close to my heart. I feel truly fortunate to be part of this inspiring community of educators and learners each day.”
