The Wartburg College chapter of Beta Beta Beta National Biological Honor Society has received a 2013 Governor’s Volunteer Award.

For 10 years, members of the honor society have regularly cleaned a two-mile stretch of U.S. Highway 3 east of Waverly as part of the Iowa Department of Transportation’s Adopt-A-Highway program.

“I appreciate our chapter being recognized for their service to the larger community,” said Dr. Ann Henninger, chair of the Department of Biology and TriBeta adviser. “In addition to our participation in the Adopt-a-Highway program, for at least 15 years TriBeta has sponsored one or two blood drives per year and sold daffodils on campus for the American Cancer Society. This award is a special thanks to our officers over the years who have been so actively involved in all aspects of the chapter’s activities.”

Beta Beta Beta is a society mostly for undergraduate students dedicated to improving the understanding and appreciation of biological study and extending boundaries of human knowledge through scientific research. The Wartburg chapter has 91 members.

The Governor’s Volunteer Awards provides all Iowa nonprofit, charitable and government organizations with an easy way to honor their volunteers with a prestigious state-level recognition award.
