Wartburg College will honor two outstanding high school teachers during Commencement ceremonies Sunday, May 27.

Marci Dunlap, currently curriculum director for the Fairfield Community School District, and Jaime Gathje, a Spanish language instructor and chair of the foreign languages department at Mayo High School in Rochester, Minn., will be recognized.

Members of Wartburg’s Class of 2012 nominated high school teachers who significantly influenced their education. The teachers will receive $500 each, and a $500 scholarship will be available for a rising senior from the recipient’s high school who attends Wartburg.

Dunlap was nominated by Megan Thompson, a biology major and Spanish minor from Fairfield. Dunlap formerly was a secondary language arts teacher, yearbook adviser, junior varsity softball coach and middle school volleyball and track coach.

She previously taught language arts and coached speech, drama and varsity sports in the Wapello and Olin school districts.

She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in secondary English education from the University of Northern Iowa and a master’s degree in secondary English language arts from the University of Iowa.

Gathje was nominated by Juliane Herder, a biology and Spanish major from Rochester.

He teaches Spanish courses from beginning to honors independent study. Previously he taught Spanish at Anoka High School. In addition, he is a Cub Scouts volunteer.

Gathje earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Spanish and child psychology and a Master of Education degree in second languages and cultures from the University of Minnesota. He also studied at the Universidad Hispalense in Sevilla, Spain.
