Wartburg Television won the Overall Excellence award among 14 honors received by the college’s student media from the Iowa Broadcast News Association.
In addition to the top prize for student stations, Wartburg TV also won first places for general reporting and sports play-by-play, while taking six second and three third places at the annual IBNA banquet in Coralville Saturday.
KWAR, Wartburg’s student radio station, received second- and third-place honors.
“I am so proud of the team’s efforts,” said Andrew Bridgewater, WTV station manager. “I couldn’t have had a better staff to lead this year.”
“It is thrilling to see these students come together as a cohesive team and create quality work,” said Dr. Penni Pier, Grant L. Price Chair in Communication Arts.

- First place — General Reporting, “Diversity!” Shelby Granath ’13
- First place — Sports Play by Play, Football vs. Coe
- Second place — Best Sportscast, SportsKnight
- Second place — Overall Excellence in Anchoring, Granath
- Second place — Sports Play-by-Play, Volleyball vs. Central
- Second place — Sports Coverage: Football Pregame Show, Taylor Umland ’13 and Kyle Palmolea ’12
- Second place — Public Affairs, KnightWatch
- Second place — In-Depth Series, “Inside the Numbers: Extreme Sports,” Granath and Palmolea
- Third place — Best Newscast, WTV8 News
- Third place — Overall Excellence in Reporting, Granath
- Third place — Political Coverage, “Bachmann Debates Gay Marriage,” Danny Housholder ’14 and Ben Hoppenworth ’13
The KWAR awards were:
- Second place — Feature, “Haiti Project,” Gretta Stark ’12
- Third place — Sports Play-by-Play, Drew Shradel ’12
