Triathlon at The W suitable for newcomers, veterans
April 12, 2012
A May 6 TRIbyKNIGHT sprint triathlon at the Wartburg-Waverly Sports & Wellness Center will offer shorter distances for competitors new to the sport as well as a fun day for triathlon veterans.
Sponsored by The W and Peregrine Charities, the USA Triathlon-sanctioned event consists of a 300-yard swim, 10.5-mile bike course and 3.2-mile run.
“Triathlon is the fastest-growing sport in the United States,” said Nilan Lansing, assistant director for group fitness at The W. “We’re happy to be hosting Waverly’s first triathlon and welcome the entire Cedar Valley to join us. If you’ve never done a triathlon, this sprint event is a great way to start.”
Registration is open to individuals competing in all three events and to three-member relay teams, with each member competing in one event.
Participants will swim in The W’s indoor pool, bike a road route that begins and ends at The W and run three one-mile loops, each including 200 meters on the Walston-Hoover Stadium track.
Individual competition is divided into 11 male and female divisions: 19 and under, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65 and older.
Registration fees through April 27 are $50 for USAT members, $62 for non-USAT members and $90 for relay teams (plus $12 for non-USAT members). Registration is $10 higher in all categories after April 27.
Lansing said the event also requires many volunteers.
“We need help with packet pick-up, setup, tear-down and parking,” Lansing said. “We’ll also need volunteers at the pool, on the bike and running courses and in the transition area.”
To reduce the congestion on race day, registrants are encouraged to pick up their triathlon packets at The W from 2 to 7 p.m. Saturday May 5. The event opens at 6 a.m. Sunday, May 6, with competition starting at 7:50 a.m. An awards ceremony is scheduled for 11 a.m.
Registration forms and more information are posted on the lower left corner at www-the-w.org. Questions can be directed to Lansing at 319-352-8715.
