Her peers in Iowa have honored Jen Sassman, Wartburg College director of financial aid, with their highest award.
Sassman is the recipient of the 2011-12 John Heisner Memorial Lifetime Achievement Award bestowed by the Iowa Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators upon a member who exemplifies the ideals of service to the profession, support of colleagues and advocacy for students.
“I was shocked to be recognized by my fellow colleagues,” Sassman said. “I feel a little guilty being honored for following a passion and doing something I love.”
Sassman, who received her bachelor’s degree in management and master’s degree in student services from the University of Northern Iowa, has worked at Wartburg for nearly 15 years.
“I had an internship with a personal financial investment group and knew right away that I needed to find a way to use my degree to help people,” Sassman said. “I sought out a job in the Financial Aid Office and was hooked.”
She said her financial aid work at Wartburg has been a rewarding experience.
“I love that Wartburg is a place that lives its mission and is extremely student-centered. The employees truly understand that we are all here for the students and it has given me the opportunity to help someone in need on a daily basis,” Sassman said.
The award reflects her significant contributions to IASFAA during an extended period.
“I have been fairly involved in IASFAA for several years, holding various elected offices in the past. I currently serve as vice president,” Sassman said, adding that she will become president-elect next year and president the following year.
Sassman is “passionate” about the IASFAA mission.
“I feel it truly supports its members and provides the type of resources and networking opportunities for us each to excel in our positions back on our own campuses,” Sassman said. “The networking and professional growth opportunities have been extremely valuable to me both personally and professionally.”
