Information about energy and waste reduction and other environmental practices will be featured at Wartburg College’s Go Green Fair Sunday, April 1.
Twenty area business and agencies will provide materials, along with some interactive exhibits, at the fair in the Hall of Champions of the Wartburg-Waverly Sports & Wellness Center from noon to 4 p.m. Four educational seminars also will be offered at the event co-sponsored by Wartburg’s Energy and Environmental Sustainability Initiative and Waverly Light & Power.
Jerry Roling Motors in Waverly will display the new Chevy Volt, which can run gas-free for 35 miles at a time as well as using gasoline, while the University of Northern Iowa industrial technology department is bringing its solar-powered boat.
Among the exhibitors will be:
- City of Waverly — items taken to recycling and what they become.
- Green Iowa AmeriCorps — low-cost weatherization, air filtration, energy-efficient light bulbs, low-flow showerheads and aerators
- U-Haul Car Share — car rental by the hour with gas and insurance included
- Wartburg’s EARTH Club — sustainability with activities geared toward children based on “The Lorax” by Dr. Seuss
- Norwex — reducing chemicals in personal care and cleaning
- CrawDaddy Outdoors — recreational activities using sustainable products
- Anne’s Liquidation Service —keeping packing materials out of the landfill
- Iowa Interfaith Power & Light — “25 Steps Under $25” to save home energy
- Hawkeye Buffalo Ranch — buffalo health and environmental advantages
- EcoFairfield — community-based sustainability education
- Bremer County Conservation — enjoying and preserving natural resources
- Waverly Farmers Market — information about its upcoming season
- Sound Advice Vac and Video — lower energy costs with automated smart lighting and equipment management
- Design 360 at the Decorating Den — green design
- Genuine Faux Farm — organic foods
- Wartburg Student Senate — campus recycling and sustainability efforts
- Bremer Iowa State University Extension — gardening, water and healthy-eating tips
- Waverly Community Gardens — flood-buyout lots used to produce food
- Bremer County 4-H youth demonstration, Sara Hoeft, 4-H youth and families programs coordinator, 2 p.m., room 2240
The fair also will include seminars on four topics:
- LED lights and lamp ratings, Curt Atkins, Waverly Light and Power energy services manager, 12:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m., room 2242
- Composting demonstration and instruction, Chelsea Ewen, Bremer County Conservation assistant naturalist, 1 and 3 p.m., room 2240
- Solar boat, UNI industrial technology department, 1:30 p.m., room 2242,
- Bremer County 4-H youth demonstration, Sara Hoeft, 4-H youth and families programs coordinator, 2 p.m., room 2240
Those attending the fair will be eligible for door prizes, including Norwex products, LED nightlight and Terracycle recycled products.
