A new scholarship will honor longtime Wartburg Community Symphony Association member Brent Jensen.

The Brent Jensen Memorial Scholarship was established through an estate gift from Grant and Nancy Jensen, Brent’s brother and sister-in-law. The first scholarship will be awarded this fall.

“Brent loved the symphony and was a longtime member. When he passed, there were significant memorials to the symphony association in his honor because people knew how he felt about our organization,” said Jon Tehven, symphony association president. “He loved the arts: music, literature, prints and paintings, as well as small, unique wooden objects. He was always at the Wartburg symphony, drum and bugle corps competitions and musical events in Waverly.”

Brent, who worked at United Equipment for 45 years, was a longtime member of theWaverly Lions Club, rode RAGBRAI 32 times and biked across the United States twice. He died May 9, 2017.

When Grant and Nancy came to Tehven with the estate gift, he asked if they would be amenable to creating a scholarship in Brent’s honor.

“They thought that would be wonderful. Brent was a very generous person who loved his family, co-workers and the Waverly community,” Tehven said. “We can’t wait to start awarding this scholarship to a Wartburg College student who plays in either the symphony or Kammerstreicher.”

The Brent Jensen Memorial Scholarship Fund was established with the Waverly Community Fund, an affiliate of the Community Foundation of Northeast Iowa. The fund is a permanent endowment fund and gifts to the fund are eligible to receive the Endow Iowa 25 percent state tax credit. Gifts the fund can be made at www.fund.cfneia.org/jensenmemorial.
