Former University of Iowa quarterback Chuck Long visited Wartburg College Thursday, May 17, to share the 16 lessons compiled in the book he released late last year.

Long, who played at Iowa from 1981-85 and was the runner-up for the Heisman Trophy (losing to Bo Jackson of Auburn University), is CEO and executive director for the Iowa Sports Foundation, which runs the Iowa Games and the Senior Games.

His book, “Destined for Greatness: The Story of Chuck Long and Resurgence of Iowa Hawkeyes Football,” was penned by author Aaron Putze.

Long opened his talk with a story about a pizza delivery guy, Ted, he befriended in college.

“He ended up being Ted Waitt, the guy who went on to found Gateway computers,” Long said. “You just never know who you are going to meet, so always get to know everyone in the room.”

Patty Storlie, assistant professor of biology, met Long on RAGBRAI, and the two have remained in touch.

“I often have juniors and seniors in my classes, and I knew Chuck’s leadership talk would be good for any student about to enter the work world,” said Storlie, who invited other classes to attend as well. “He is such a giving person. After the talk he told me how much he loves working with college kids because this age range is such a special time in a person’s life, and it’s a great chance to reach young people with strong, positive messages.”
