Recognition Details
Each award below references the sponsoring organization before the title.
Wartburg College established the Baldwin Fellows program to recognize the many contributions provided by Mark and Peggy Baldwin.
Mark and his wife Peggy created an endowment to support this initiative, which offers learning opportunities for a select group of students to grow in their understanding and practice of leadership skills.
The Baldwin Fellows each create a service project to benefit Wartburg or the local community. Students are selected their freshman year and stay in the program until they graduate. As sophomores, they travel with me to the United States Airforce Academy to attend the National Character and Leadership Symposium. They stay on base with cadets, hear great military and civilian speakers, and bring best practices back to Wartburg.
The leadership minor is a popular additional credential many Wartburg students pursue in addition to their chosen major to demonstrate their commitment to making a difference in their professional and personal communities. The minor is offered through the Institute for Leadership Education, which was established in 1989 with the creation of the Irving R. Burling Chair in Leadership. Wartburg defines leadership as “taking responsibility for our communities and making them better through public action.”
The Wartburg chapter of NSLS was founded in 2016 to help members create the success to which they aspire, by enabling members to engage in reflection and self-exploration; to provide members with tools for action; inspiration to hold each other accountable; and motivation to achieve their goals. This is a place for members to join in with other student leaders in Success Networking Teams, where they interact with one another to create and achieve personal goals. To qualify for induction, candidates must attend one orientation, one leadership training day, 3 speaker broadcasts, and 3 Success Networking Team meetings. Each of these activities is designed to help members enhance their leadership capacity and create strategies for continued success. Once inducted, individuals become active lifetime members of the Society. Completion of the membership requirements should only serve as the first step in a larger journey now shared with fellow members.

Every year, 125 or more student leaders from around the country are awarded $10,000 grants each to implement a Project for Peace, typically between May and August.
The program encourages student leaders to develop innovative, community-centered, and scalable responses to the world’s most pressing issues. Along the way, they increase their knowledge, improve their skills, and begin to see themselves as agents of change.
Projects for Peace prioritizes direct community impact and collaboration and grantees’ growth as leaders and change agents, in hopes of serving the greater goal of contributing to peace building throughout the world.
SEED Coalition is a network of college and university campuses across Minnesota and Iowa. With the support of Seed Coalition, these campuses strive to move toward a more just and equitable society by strengthening education for an engaged democracy.
SEED Coalition hosts an annual celebration honoring outstanding contributions in civic and community engagement. This year, each campus was invited to honor four recipients at the Seed Coalition Presidents’ Awards.

The Presidents’ Community Collaboration Award recognizes a project or initiative co-created by campus and community partners that showcases meaningful collaboration and exemplifies the campus’s civic and community engagement, contributing to both student learning and community well-being.
The Pastor Trachte award recognizes a faculty or staff member who embodies enthusiasm, support, involvement, and overall commitment to Wartburg’s mission of service. The award is named after Pastor Larry Trachte, who loving served the Wartburg Community as campus pastor for 35 years. PT taught, mentored, honored, and befriended thousands of students, faculty, staff, and alumni leaving a legacy of service rooted in relationship.

The St. Elizabeth award recognizes Wartburg students that live out a commitment to service in, with, and for the community. The award is named after St. Elizabeth of Hungary who, while a resident in the Wartburg Castle, built a hospital and smuggled food to help feed the hungry outside of her castle. Her legacy is one of justice and compassion, which we hope inspires us all to live lives dedicated to the common good.
