Wartburg professors recognized for scholarly achievements

Two experienced and two early-career Wartburg College faculty were recently recognized for excelling in research in and out of the classroom.

Stephanie Toering Peters and Karen Black received the Dr. Peggy & Kendall Pruisner Scholarly and Creative Activities Award. Cole Davidson and Kylie Gougler received the Dr. Peggy & Kendall PruisnerEarly Career Scholarly and Creative Activities Award.

Toering Peters, the Dr. Rich L. and Sandra K. Wahl Professor in Biology, is a member of the Genomics Education Partnership, a collaborative effort to introduce undergraduates to bioinformatics research and annotate recently sequenced genomes to understand more about gene structure and function. She also is a member of Fly-CURE, which provides undergraduate students with authentic research experiences in genetics lab courses.

Black, the Rudi Inselmann Endowed Professor in Organ, was recognized for her work in recitals and hymn festivals as well as for her success in composition of and arranging organ and choral music. In addition to sharing her talents with the college, Black has performed throughout the U.S. and Germany. She has published organ and choral arrangements, and in 2021 she released an organ album, “Ein feste Burg,” celebrating the 25th anniversary of the installation of the Wartburg Chapel Dobson organ.

Davidson, assistant professor of biology, has completed extensive research on the cytotoxic potential of compounds originally discovered in plants on aggressive cancers like glioblastoma, an aggressive and devastating form of brain cancer. Much of his work has included students, who were then given the opportunity to present their research at national conferences.

Gougler, a visiting assistant professor of voice, is a devoted advocate for Czech opera and art song, performing both nationally and internationally. She has published three anthologies of Czech operatic literature and collaborates with the National Czech and Slovak Museum and Library and Czech Consulate General in Chicago on special music projects.
